320 BPM? WTF?

I guess the real question for me is why? The notes are barely cleanly articulated at 170bmp, it's just not very good note definition, and for all intents and purposes there isn't much musical about it other than just trying to break a world record, good for him in that sense... I used to be focused a lot on speed and still try to keep pushing it forward a little bit, but for the vast majority of applications I've been doing in the past while speed isn't really necessary and actually quite a few people I've worked with complain about it as over playing or playing to much/to fast with out a good musical context. It's a battle I'm still fighting with daily, to slow down my fingers and let the brain do the work... will probably take me the rest of my life to get half way decent at it, and even then I may still not have it down haha.

I think there's a fine line with what you're talking about. I think you can still play with blazing speed in a musical manner and there are a lot of guys who have made a living off just that. I think if you can shred when it's called for it adds a little something to your skill set that a lot of guys don't have, especially if you can do it clearly, with good feel, and with class. I have to admit though, the guy in the vid is overkill. As for the why, if I (or most other people) had the chance to prove I was the fastest guitarist alive and I could pull it off I'd do it, if for nothing else than the title. Anybody would like to be the best/fastest at what they enjoy doing, that's why we practice like we do, so we can rock out, not just play quarter notes all day long

Yea I hear ya man, I don't know I'm weird in that sense that I've never really been into sweep picking and SUPER SUPER fast stuff, don't get me wrong I like to shred a bit my self, but I'm starting to try and keep it more tasteful ya know? Again that's all subjective, some people think EVH sucks, some think Slash sucks, some think Robben Ford sucks, some hate Malmstein, it's ALL personal opinion and taste and incredibly subjective.

Haha yea it's a little overkill but I get your point about the title thing, if you can do it why not?

Those people are all fucked up   Seriously though, you do enjoy a little light shredding, I've seen a couple of your vids. Good stuff  .

That's pretty technically impressive, I guess...

But it reminded me of this tune I was just listening to. Here's actually making music at ~350bpm...on the fly

Pretty damn impressive from a technical standpoint. When he hit 300bpm his movements didn't even look human anymore. :scared: Looked like a tape in fast-forward!

I still had to skip through parts of it though. It's just not very listenable until it's put in a musical context for me.
I'd like to check out some of his bands to see what he can do with actual songs.
BTW that video is WAY cooler than this shit:

:jerkit:
