4 heads - one cab switcher

Hey guys, I want to rack four amp heads in my studio and be able to route between heads to a single speaker cab in my ISO room. I don't need to switch live...I just don't want to have to physically disconnect and reconnect the ISO cab speaker cable every time I want to switch amps.

The amp switchers I've seen assume there is a seperate cab connected to each amp...and most only allow for two amps.

Any idea?

There's really nothing on the market that will allow that many amps. If you can find the old Bradshaw switchers, those will work great (if you find the preamp switcher, he can mod it to switch heads). Sound Sculpture made a nice one, but they haven't been selling theirs for a year or so.

I'm wondering if a patchbay might work?

I don't see how. You need a load for each amp...

Well, I only plan on having ONE amp powered on at a time...the one that's patched in.

Doesn't Tonebone make something like that?
The headbone or something.

would an amp switcher be able to handle it?
the voodoo labs one is built like a brick shithouse, totally silent and you can have it set up to only feed one channel at a time. maybe you can call them and ask if it will work for what you want.

If you don't use delays in the loop the headbone works. It switches the front (like A/B) and the speaker-outs (to low wattage resistors - thats safe: no input (A/B) = no output).
What you need is a three fold solution or a simple midi based switching unit with 3 relays - to switch 3 headbones.

You could ask "Lehle" to build you one or contact the "Sound Sculpture" guys.

Man, I'm so bummed out!!! I checked out Sound Sculpture's web page and even though it only does three amps, I could live with that, it was PERFECT for what I want to do. So, I called Sound Sculpture to ask about the 3 amp / 2 cab switcher. They told me it's been DISCONTINUED!!!

They are redesigning it with more features...will NOT be availabe until the end of the year.

CAE also discontinued their switcher.

Thanks for the tip though. :D

Chuck Levin's, in Wheaton, MD, uses a setup with patchbays for their amps and cabs in the store. if you're only using one head at a time, with no plans to be switching between them on the fly, you should be fine with a patch bay.

That is interesting...I think I'll give them a call and see what type (model, make) of patchbay they're using...thanks.

Actually, Bob has re-released his 4 amp switchers:

AMP SELECTORS ARE BACK!

Due to popular demand, CAE Amp Selectors are back in limited production quantities.

As part of the Custom Series, this is the popular "Version 1" style, which allows selection of up to 4 Tube amplifiers, and connects the amps to a common load speaker cabinet. Unused amps are protected, and of course, only one amp is allowed active at a time. Line Level output (rear panel) is also available (with Level Control) to allow for a "wet/dry" effects setup. A rear panel tuner output is also provided, and is active even when no amps are selected. All amp sends are transformer isolated to prevent ground loop hum. This unit is midi controlled (via Program Change Commands) and comes with a dedicated 4 switch Midi Foot Controller, and 20ft 4 pin xlr connection cable! As a bonus, the amp selector (via the footswitch) outputs the same program change commands to control effects processors, if necessary.

This is unit is part of the Custom Series, and is hand built to order by Bob Bradshaw, and is available direct from CAE only.

Deposits are being taken now for early 2008 delivery.

I may actually have the 1st one: Actually I had him modify an older unit, but he said the only thing he used was the circuit board, and it got a totally new chassis and everything else:

"...Yup Ferrari piece= Ferrari price

Price is $1,495."

Yeah, I think I saw that price before. The Sound Sculpture unit was only $800.00...something I could live with. Unfortunately, the unit has been discontinued. The Bradshaw unit looks fantastic but it's out of my price range. I may just end up finding some kind of patchbay solution. Thanks for the info. :D

Sometimes they pop up on ebay. Unfortunately a patchbay will not allow you to run multiple amps into one cab
