Replaced the burnt power tubes in my 5153 with a set of Sovtek 6L6WXT+s. I dig them so much more than the stock JJs. They are much warmer with out the nasty high end fizzle. Still need to get some new preamp tubes, but that will have to wait for a bit. Here is a vid of the amp and now it sounds now on channels 2 & 3.

May I ask what you bias them at? It does sound warmer in the lower mids with more clarity and less fizzle. How do you like the Red now?

Been really liking your vids lately. Sounds great!

Set the bias to 28mA. I have always loved the red channel. The blue channel was hit or miss. I have noticed that I like the blue channel a lot more not, after the tube change. Still love the red channel.

Thanks man! The funny thing is that when I bought this amp, almost a year ago, I had the gain up a lot more and it was like scorched earth tone. These days, I find myself backing the gain down and enjoying the amp more and more. It will do the whole uber high gain thing, but as a rock player it's been nice to find that tonal element in this amp. Thanks again! I'm glad that you've enjoyed my clips.

I replaced my 5153's tubes with all JJs. It's alright, I guess. JJs are just so fucking unreliable and noisy when they are warming up. Crackling city. I'll probably try the Sovteks on my next retube.

My tech recently noticed my EVH was at 20 ma, so he bumped it up to 30 and to my surprise, I didn't like it.
It made the amp sounds harsher and raunchier, not in a good way. I told him to bring it back down to 20ma, which is a little cold, but I love the tone much more. Bass and upper mids are popping through much better. weird but true.

I tried 30mA and didn't like it either. Mine came at 25mA from the factory. I bumped it to 28mA and like it there.

Totally agree with you about the Sovtek 6L6's. It's what the early amps came with from the factory. As a previous poster stated, I also like the bias cold in this amp. Try the EH/Sovtek preamp tube mix. I'm going to change my 50watter to Sovteks. I still like the tone of my 100w more.

Great clip btw!

Sounds great!!!
Your clips are what pushed me over the edge on wanting to try a 5153, I got one a few weeks ago and love it so far..... Where did you buy your tubes from?

Wow! That really did warm up the amp. Doesn't sound as congested in the mids either. Sounds great and great playing, as usual!

I got the tubes from tubestore.com. Thanks for the comments guys! At the moment, you're my only audience. Lol. Working on putting a new band together, but until then it's all YT clips. Lol. Gonna try to go in more of a 70s rock direction. Think Coverdale era Deep Purple.
