5150 III 50 watt vs. 100 watt clips!

Very unscientific, but here are some clips:

First, all the controls on both amps were set the same on the lead channel. Here are the pics:

Here are the raw, non-EQ'd clips. these are straight from the 57 on my Diezel 4x12 into the DAW. I lowered the waveform volume of the 100 watt to closely match the 50. At the same volume knob setting, the 50 was quieter (obviously).

Limiter is added on the master buss to get proper levels.

here they are with a little bit of EQ in my DAW...Still the same miked tones:

they both sound good. I couldnt tell the difference but im listening on my tv. i want the 50 watt! i want to hear a demo through the evh speakers as well.
 
They both sound really good.. the 100 watt has a big more low end to it from what I hear in those clips.. the 50 sounds thinner and brighter.. cool comparision..
 
I think the post EQ'd clips sound pretty much the same. The post EQ for the 100 watt is basically a 4dB shelf EQ at 850 Hz. Doing that puts it right in line with the 50 watt, which is a little brighter.
 
Great clips! Both sound excellent to me.

Does Ch2 on the 50w head have more gain then the 100w head?

It seems to be true on every clip/video I've heard so far...which would be awesome, sounds more saturated too (CH2).

Which do you like better of the 2 in the room? and y?
 
I don't think it's that it has more gain, just that it gets to that point a little earlier than the 100 watt....

wouldn't the perceived darkess of the 100 watter go away if you cranked it up more, relative to the 50 watter?

They both sound awesome but I prefer the 100 .
 
I just got my 50 watter the other night but alas...I have no cabinet yet.....horse without the saddle.
However, I'm going to pick up an EVH speaker for my ISO cab and try that out this weekend.

I'd suppose that, too, but even when I turn it up it stays darker. Not as much perhaps, but definitely still darker.
 
i recently pickup up the 100w and love it, this is my 2nd 5153 and the previous one i had for a while and liked it but wanted to try something else, after a few years whitout the 5153 i missed it and bought another, this time i also got the evh cab and it sounds awesome together.

thank you for these clips, awesome comparison! how would you say the ch2's compare between the 50w and 100w and how would you say the ch1's compare between the 50w and 100w?

is the 50w significantly lighter than the 100w?

TO me, Channel 2 sounds pretty much the same. Overall the 50 is brighter than the 100, so there's that, but the amount of saturation and core tone seem to be similar on both the red and blue channels.

The green channel is easily heard as being the most different. There is a lot less gain on the clean channel of the 50. I can turn the gain all the way up and still get decently clean tones with single coils and light picking, whereas anything past 10:00 on the 100 is really reaching into the blue channels gain territory.

To me, if you want a wider range of cleans the 50 would be my choice, but the shared controls would make it hard to be a true simple 3 channel switcher. No matter how you have it set IMO, there will be a big difference going from the green to blue channel.

It seems to me depending on the player and the style of music, is really a 2 channel amp...For the clean/mid gain guys it would be the green channel with the gain cranked and an OD for more grit and then the red for leads, or for the heavier guys it would be the blue channel for rhythms and red for leads. Otherwise the green and blue channels are just too unbalanced - IMO.

For me, I am not a channel switcher. For my metal band, it's red channel 100% of the time. For jamming with friends, it's either green channel and an OD, or blue channel and my volume pot. TBH, I've never even hooked up the footswitch to either the 50 OR my 100.
