So i have an audition for a band coming up and they play in B and Drop A (they need a rhythm player). I sold my 7 string like 5 months ago and don't have the cash for another one. I had a thought of maybe stringing one of my 6 strings as a 7 and dropping the high e. kinda like a homemade baritone lol. I would much rather just buy another 7 but im really broke. so if you have any ideas please let me know.

I did that for a long time.
I use GHS DYM strings with a wound 3rd, so it's effectively the same as the lower 6 strings form a 7-string set.

The band Karnivool does it another way - they drop the middle string (D), so they they can have the same range as a 7 on a 6-string guitar. (BEAgbe)

I used Ernie Ball "Not Even Slinkys" when I tuned down to B standard.

Either tune like the top 6 on a 7, or just tune the whole thing "standard" but in B.

Either way would work, I have done both numerous times.

Oh, and I have tried several gauges, and somewhere around 12's or 13's is good..

Why not just use regular B tuning? Using a 7 string B tuning on a 6 string and dropping the high e would be very odd to play...

Thanks everyone for the input I think Im gonna tune to B standard and get some thick strings... I wish I could just swing a 7 string, the only thing I have that I can part with is a 5 string bass, I put it on CL but no bites yet. So if u know anyone lookin for a 5 string lemme know

Depends on how the band uses the 7 strings I guess. If they just chug on the top few strings, either will probably work. But, if they actually do lots of open string sustainy chords and such, then the 7 without the bottom string would probably work better.
