So a while back I ordered a new set of power tubes (6L6GC) for my wife's bass amp (yes, I married a 5'1", Five string warwick, All Tube Bass amp playin woman! ) and I was sent some 6L6GBs. I've never heard of these, so I was scared to just throw them in to her amp (Mesa Buster Bass). What is the difference between the GCs and the GBs? The guy I talked to at Harris Teller (wholesaler) said that the GB just stood for Glass Bottle, and there really wasn't any difference. I am a little hesitant to trust him on this, and just don't want to fry her amp, especially being a boogie w/ fixed bias. I think it's safe to say I trust you guys waaaayyy more than the sales guy @ HT.

Thanks,
K

Are these the military spec ones that were USA made sometime in the 80's?

I am a 50's Masco amp that came with 6L6GA's. They do not have the same ratings as a 6L6GC and I would not recommend using the 6L6GB or 6L6GA's in an amp that calls for the 6L6GC.

For my amp, which I am restoring, I bought some TAD 6L6GC's to have as a backup.

Harris teller should be fired...they are *not* the same tube. The 6l6GB is actually much closer to a 5881 than a 6L6 and it many cases it actually *is* a 5881. It depends on the tube maker.

The only 6l6GB that can hang with a 6l6GC would be the JAN 6L6GB made in the 80's. Killer tube that can handle decent plate voltages.

Here are pics of the tubes in question. the one on the far left is a 1960's Tung Sol 5881. It is very similar to a 6L6gb. the one in the middle is a GE 7581A (Think of it as a 6L6 on steroids) the far right is a Phillips 6l6GC.

Do these look like the same tube to you?
