80s players I rarely see mentioned

Ok, so I see an over amount of love for EVH in here, I see loads of love for George Lynch and many 80s players but there's lots of guys and bands that I don't see mentioned very often. I end up in debates about 80's players and likely look like an 80s hater but really I'm not at all, I grew up in the 80s and started playing in those days and there's lots of names missing around these parts.

Tipton/Downing

Where's the love for these serious players, their legacy and their gear etc.
 
I'm sure you'll see plenty of live for Paul Gilbert - he continues to play like a mutha & is always active. Love everything he does
 
I'd take Smith, Murray, Mustaine, Downing, Tipton and Gilbert ANY day over Lynch.
All of them except Gilbert have recorded some of the most epic riffs and solos of all time.
Geez man.
 
Tipton/Downing have the best career long catalog of riffs n leads out of all of them, for me anyways :rock:
 
Yes!! Schenker is Amazing!! Does he ever use his pinky? Been watching a lot of his youtube footage and I never seen him put his pinky on the fretboard....
 
I've got to throw Vinnie Moore in here as well. He's probably my favorite to come out of the crop of 80's shredders.

Just two words..... drum roll...... AKIRA TAKASAKI... for those who have never heard of one of the GREATEST 80's lead guitarist of the japanese metal band LOUDNESS, then check out the album
THUNDER IN THE EAST :D You may or may not like the songs (I like most of them) but the guitar solos are EPIC compositions within themselves, and talk
about a great tone... He is up there with Lynch or any one else from that era in terms of playing. A VERY under rated guitarist.
 
Paul Gilbert is a busy guy, lots of recording & teaches guitar to the masses, not to mention touring & stand ins.
 
Akira is amazing. Got to see him play live in 1984 at the Country Club in Reseda , CA

I like where this is going. See, I respect EVH and Lynch for their innovations, skills, legacy and everything they have contributed to both music and equipment but they just aren't the end of the road for me. Both of them were able to support bands on their shoulders and be the focal point but lots of the other guys mentioned did the same. Sure maybe Scott Ian isn't a shredder but he has always been a riff writing machine and has always had monster tone, so I thought to include him because I love listening to a monster riff as much as I love listening to a monster solo.
 
Seriously, Becker was a monster. Vinnie Moore rarely gets a mention but the guy is STILL precise and an amazing player. He's unbelievable. Andy Laroque is a legend (king diamond), Shenker does get his dues and mention here enough but he's another obvious one.

You know the funniest thing about all these guys? Their early works were all done with boring old off the shelf gear like SD-1's, MArshalls, and strong ass hands.

Look at the 10th one on my list above.
I grew up listening to the Loudness records
with all Japanese Lyrics. "Law of the Devils Land"
"Disillusion" etc....
I Couldn't understand a word but Akira and
the rest of the Band SMOKED!!!
I even had Akira's Solo record "Tusk of Jaguar"
Not as good as Roudness but still cool.

He does that with such ease it is crazy... one thing a lot of these shredders have, big hands. Ever noticed that? Malmsteen, EVH , Becker .. sure a lot don't but I always found that interesting that a lot of these legends do. Really allows them to cover the fretboard with ease and control the vibrato.
