80's tones

Besides jcm 800's what other amps were used during that time? I am talking about the pop/metal tones heard regularly on the FM dial blasting out of your Alpine systems back in the day......I am curious to see what alternatives were used besides Marshall......

JCM800, Mesa Mark II and III's. Some Gallien Krueger amps. Randall solid state amps.

Mostly Marshall's, modded Marshall's or a stock Marshall and a pedal or two. TS-9 or Boss.
Mesa Boogie, Laney, Soldano, Fenders have been on everything.

Wow......Fender was one amp I didn't think I would hear about.......I have a just refreshed 67 Bassman head and lots of OD options......What are some examples of those overdriven Fender tones????

I also have a Mesa DC5 so I guess maybe I won't need to purchase another amp to achieve what I am going for....

Yeah as above. A heap of lead sounds are the Soldano's or even the Custom Audio 3+ preamp

Those Laney AOR Pro-Tubes heads go for way too cheap. There's a 50-watter with the slant 412 for $300 in Nashville right now.

Do it. I bought two and eventually sold them. I was more into modern metal tones a la Soldano SLO inspired amps at the time. I'd probably appreciate one more now, especially the 30-watters.

Love Nuno's tone......I live in N.E and saw him many times locally and his tone was always amazing..
Skid Row's tone makes my ears happy as well.....Really thick lead tones.....

I believe the guitar player for Salty Dog used S.S Randalls on Every Dog Has His Day...Love the tone
on that album.......Wouldn't have a problem going S.S for a tone like that........

I think I may pick one up with the low risk.......SLO's are just incredible, I have had the good fortune of
playing through one and I didn't want to stop.....

I fooled around with my Bassman today and surprised to hear how well it worked.....
Replaced phase inverter tube with a 12ax7, jumped the channels for beef and put a 3 button
Plexitone in front......Was okay but still a little lacking.......Picked up my Mockinbird with a
Super Distortion in the bridge and the "lacking" left the building.....It will do until I pick up
something else.......

If you have a three channel Plexitone, it'll get you there. I have one and it kills through a Twin Reverb.
My Bogner Red will as well.

Lots of Modded Marshalls and Fenders in LA. Lee Jackson(Metaltronix) did a bunch of Marshalls and Fenders, he added his 5 way mid switch to them. Jose Arredondo, for those trying to get VH's sound, I think even Soldano got his start out there modding amps.
My dad stored a bunch of these old newspapers called the Recycler that had amazing classifieds in it. I think I saw Steve Lynch's Jackson used in Autograph's Turn it up video for $400. There was a huge cabinet by Flagg that VH used on their tours but it was a fixed 8x12, good luck moving those!

I used a 70's silver face Super Reverb 4x10 combo with a distortion pedal back then for gainy stuff.

On the pop side of things, Roland JC-120. That sound is all over pop tunes from back then. I think Satch even recorded parts of "Surfing" with one. I remember seeing a ton of live acts back in the day with those in the backline. Lots of players used those Music Man hybrid amps as well. Also Lab Series L5.
