Ehh? I'm going deaf, I honestly didn't hear that much of a difference between any of them. B and C seem slightly hotter than A.

A was much brighter than the other two. B and C sounded a bit dark. I guess I'm going with A.

All of these are raw recorded audio files; no effects whatsoever.

One variable was changed in the chain.

You changed the physical volume pot values it seems.

voted B

On decent headphones (Audio Technica M50's) i'm hearing what most others were describing. A is the brightest, B is slightly darker, and C is much darker. Given that the L performances are all the same as well as the R (as near as I can tell anyway) that rules out changing anything on the guitar I think. My guess is the length/type of cable being run into your DI/Reamp.

i know there were simillar changes of someone doing a comparison of cable ENDS - everything down to the lengths of the cables were the same, and the differences were very simillar.

i could swing with either different TRS terminators or different volume pot's.

Ya never know with these tricksters!

My guess is 3ft cable, 6ft cable, and 12ft cable. Guitar volume pot changes are a lot of effort, unless he just hooked in a couple different resistor values. Plus, unless my ears are deceiving me, there are only two actual takes of guitar that are duplicated which would mean he would have to have robot consistency to pull that off after swapping pots. :worship:

good point

as far as we know the only differences could be recorded on a sunny day and a cloudy day

ive heard simillar changes in my gear on certain days and thought "WTF?! this sounded great last week? must be an off day for the tubes" and just grit my teeth and like it

A and B both sounded fine to me, and C sounded a bit congested/less peaky. Of course if you were using a fat sounding humbucker and wanted a more congested sound, then C might be your preference whereas A and B would sound too peaky.

A and B were close enough that I arbitrarily chose B as my favorite. Sounded slightly thicker than A.

Hah no kidding! I always go back and try to remind myself that its likely just my ears. This is why IMO the Mesa "Tweaker" amps like the Mark etc are always the ones that people insist "sound good one day and shit the next". Its the ears changing, not the amps. Sitting in front of an amp and tweaking for hours always fatigues your ears. You think you have it sounding good and then the next day.......crap.

I voted A, seemed like there was more presence (blanket taken off of the speaker)

I will also put in a vote for different cables.

I'm curious about this, thanks for doing it.

OKAY GUIZE: Here are the answers:

Whoever guessed that cables were the variable changed wins!

What do you win? You already won; you have good ears, or good guessing skills

Anyone who tells you that cables don't make a huge difference is either deaf, stupid, or trying to sell you inferior cable

Here are the results:

a. Lava Soar Instrument Cable/Gepco X-Band XLR or TRS Cable for the entire rig
b. Lava Soar Instrument Cable/generic XLR cable
c. Monster Rock 500 Instrument Cable/generic XLR cable

Anyone who is interested in purchasing the cable, it is quite affordable in my opinion, and available from www.lavacable.com

The owner, Mark Stoddard, is one hell of a businessman when it comes to customer service, and a very nice fellow.

Hope you guys enjoyed!

Greg
