A couple of great shows in the last few days

I’ve always loved going to see live shows since I was a kid. In my early 50s now, I still love it and go to as many as I can, I probably average one or two a month at this point. Over the last few days, I caught two very different shows that were both amazing in their own ways.

This past Saturday was Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie at the local big outdoor amphitheater. Manson fucking killed it! Honestly one of the greatest shows I’ve been to in a long time, they were some of the best performers (with a giant stage show) that I’ve ever seen. I was there mostly to see them, and they didn’t disappoint, they sounded SO good. I mostly go to small venues, so it was super fun to see a big show like that. The Rob Zombie set was even bigger/brighter/flashier/everything stage show, and was a ton of fun to watch, but the actual performance wasn’t as good as Manson. Still incredibly fun though, 10/10, had a fucking good time.

Then last night was a small club for Suicidal Tendencies with Cro-Mags opening. Holy shit. ENERGY. Harley does one thing, but it’s a fun thing to watch. And when ST hit the stage, it was ridiculous. Constant movement, constant huge energy, constant sing-along anthems, Mike moves like he’s 30 years younger than he is, and he doesn’t stop. The crowd was going OFF all night, it was amazing just to be in that room, and part of that.

I’ve had a massive smile on my face for the last four days now, and it’s all thanks to going out and seeing bands play live. I feel rejuvenated from it every time, and hope I can keep doing it for another 50 years

is manson finally sober? rob zombie is never good live. his production team is top notch so he doesn't really have to do shit but dance around with the hat down low and blurt every 5th word. Throw in a some big YEAH's and WOW's and you'll really impress the kind of people that think Dragula ISN'T the lamest thing to come out in the last 30 years

Oof, tough one. Off the top of my head, maybe more than three.

my first show ever without my parents taking me was Sonic Youth when Goo came out. What a way to start, maybe that's why I'm hooked

Nine inch Nails in 2019(?) They played five or six nights in a row, the night I went the entire set list was from 1994 or older. My 20-year old inner self was giddy

Jane's Addiction back before they broke up (the first time ) I'd say their show right before they broke up (the last time), but Perry sounded like shit. The band was AWESOME though.

Stooges in the mid 2000's. The album sucked, but the show was amazing. It was before Iggy got too old, and he was in full effect. Ron Asheton on guitar not long before he died. I wish I could've seen them the first time around, but I'm not that old

Beastie Boys sometime in the earlyish 90's. Those fellas know how to throw a PARTY

The Black Angels in the late 20-teens. They sounded MASSIVE, just a constant wall of sound. Probably felt this one as much as heard it.

is manson finally sober?

He mentioned it during the set. They started into I Don't Like the Drugs But the Drugs Like Me, cut it after like 20 seconds, talked about it, then played Dope Show. At least he has a theme!

Pretty much nailed it, yeah. He struggled really badly through More Human than Human, the solo stuff is WAY more forgiving. White Zombie songs were 100x times more interesting that anything that came after. We left during Dragula to beat the parking crowd

First time I aaw Suicidal Tendencies was in 94 opening for Danzig and Metallica and they were great! Much more enjoyable live for me.

This past week brought two more headliners to town.

Turnstile - I really like the fast songs, obviously super debatable if it’s “hardcore”. If it is, I’ve never seen so many heart hands on camera at a hardcore show They get a TON of energy out of the crowd, which is impressive in a world of shows full of stationary dudes with folded arms just staring at the stage. I could really do without the 5-minute synth breaks and dreamy songs, but I’ll call it a win just to see Jacksons and 5150s in front of huge crowds that probably don’t often see that sort of thing.

Mastodon - to be honest, I’m not a huge fan but they’re talented guys who play music adjacent to what I like, and going out to something like this beats the hell out of sitting at home on a Saturday night. The venue was crazy loud, so that helped too Tons of fun, I’m always happy to expand a little outside of my wheelhouse. I liked them better live than recorded, but when isn’t that true?
