A HUGE band you saw before they broke?

I grew up between Weston and Wayland (graduated from Weston High School). The job I had through the last couple of years of high school was as a transporter at New England Baptist Hospital. I miss living there! In high school...my friends and I hung out in Framingham at Fun 'n Games arcade. Ran into Tom Scholtz on a couple of occasions. Always wished I could've run into Ric Okasek. Great place to grow up!
F ‘n G is still there, but a shadow of its former self. Boston (the city) was a guitar heavy town back in the day. Tons of great players.

I used to see Nile play quite a bit in the mid to late 90's. They're not huge compared to some of the bands mentioned in this thread, but for death metal they're pretty well known. I lived a few hours away from their hometown, so they came through regularly. It wasn't exactly a death metal haven where I was at, so they usually played smaller clubs with hardly anybody there. They always sounded good and put on great shows, though. A few albums later they came back through and played one of the larger clubs in the area and there was ton of people there, which was cool to see.
I took a lesson from Karl and have two more booked. I think he is still in Greenville as he said he was an hour and a half away from me.

DT Played to 50-60 people that night. That's it. I Remeber bringing some older chick(she was 30) with me(i was 19) that was WAY WAY out of my league & her getting drunk. I thought i was gonna get some, didn't happen.

Machine Head, Burn My Eyes just came out. The opened for Napalm Death and Obituary, and it was a killer show.

Of course, being in Florida, I saw many bands before they hit it big. Obituary, Deicide, Death, Savatage, Morbid Angel, and many others. This was the Death Metal capital of the world in the early 90's.

Lamb of God and Gojira are the first two that come to mind for me

Back in the day I saw Whitesnake open for Motley Crue. It was just before they broke out with several hits back in 87.

Totally agree. We used to call Fun 'n Games "FAGS" for short (no offense to anyone). You could get away with it in the 80s. My best friend from high school got accepted to Berklee. We used to take the T to Copley Square all the time.

Welcome to Boston! Lived there for 8 years back when the Combat Zone was a bigger deal.
I’m still here !!! Been here all my life.

Methuen (adjacent to Salem, NH) for 37 years.
We were definitely spoiled when it comes to guitar growing up in the Boston area.

Funny you mention the CZ. Older guitar buddy neighbor took me to my first concert in Boston
when I was 14 - J. Geils. We left early and he'd given me a stack of guitar mags for the ride?????

Get there way early and he parks, says he's got something to do and will be back in a hour.
(that's why the magazines)

He'd walked over to the CZ for a few drinks and peeks before the show. :ROFLMAO:

That’s way cool. I never met him, but I knew a guy that either knew him or at least met him a number of times and he always said Karl was a super nice dude.

Chris Stapleton, in about 2013. Played a show for about 5 bucks entry fee in Jacksonville down at the landing at a place called Mavericks. Maybe 25-30 people there. The musicians and writers in the circles I hung out at in the time all were humongous fans, as I was as well, and it was fantastic to say the least. ate Waffle House with the band and him later that night haha. Great times.

not really a brag, but i saw nickelback, and linkin park, with another band, at The Shelter (if you've ever seen the movie 8 mile, its the club Em is battle raping in), in Detroit in 98 or 99. I just went cuz it was something to do that night, never heard of any of the bands, and didn't really think they were anything special, but obviously shows what i know cuz both bands got massive.

My band used to support The Wiggles back in the late '80s... when they were known as The Cockroaches and played country-influenced pop-rock (that's what it sounded like to me at the time anyway - nothing to write home about, that's for sure).

So I guess you could say I saw The Wiggles before they made it big.
