Just got this today. Bullshit!

We recently changed our pricing so that all PayPal customers can receive
money from friends and family within the US and CA for free. PayPal
merchants receiving money as payment for a purchase, continue to incur
fees.

We're not sure if you are aware of this, but we noticed that some of
your customers are sending you personal payments for purchases.
Unfortunately, this violates our rules, and we need your help correcting
this. Please don't ask or allow your customers to use personal payments
to pay for their purchases.

If we continue to see such activity after 14 days, we may have to
disable your ability to receive personal payments, and then you will pay
fees for all money received through PayPal.

You can find more information about payment types and fees in sections
4.2 and 8 of our User Agreement - just click "Legal Agreements" at the
bottom of any PayPal page.

If you have any questions, concerns, or think we may have made a
mistake, please contact us at www.paypal.com/contactus. Thank you for
helping us resolve this matter.

Sincerely,

Personal to personal Team

PayPal, Inc

Nice huh?

how do they differentiate between "merchants" and everybody else?

it's been so long since i started my PP account, i can't remember if they ask

I haven't had a PayPal account in years, after having them be uncooperative when I was scammed through eBay. It doesn't seem like a reliable method to receive money anymore, after hearing about all the refund policy scams happening lately. I sometimes have to send a debit card through there since some online businesses won't take direct payment though, but haven't had to get another account. Are the payment fees really that high?

they recently bumped the fees up to 4%, which can add up to a lot if you're flipping $4K amps/guitars.

I sold my Diezel VH4S on Ebay and they soaked me for $120 in listing fees and then Paypal was another $120.00.......
But it is a easy medium to use for payments.
Wish it wasnt so damn pricey!!

Are you accepting payments for gear/goods as personal payments? If so, you are gaming the system and taking money out of their pockets. What would you expect them to do?

Look, I hate how high the PayPal fees are, but none of us HAS to use them. You're paying for the convenience and the ability to accept credit card payments. They certainly have a right to call you on it when they see you are violating policy to avoid fees. You're in the wrong on this issue, not them (unless these are truly friends sending you cash for personal reasons)...

That's ridiculous, and I could see it quickly adding up. If I remember correctly, they were around 2% some years back, which wasn't too bad at the time, because I was mostly selling sports and trading cards through eBay, rarely getting over 50 dollars for a payment.

Basically, if you want to be able to accept credit card payemnts, you need a merchant account...

When you sell through eBay and accept PayPal as payment, I estimate you end up losing 10% of the gross sale. It sucks balls...

Steve

As much as I dotn like the high fees it is just too convienent and easy to buy/sell.
So I suck it up and grumble....but that about the extent of it from me.

That's funny bro! I also grumble.

Ya know it's funny too cause PP called me just last week to congradulate me for being one of their original customers. They said I was like their 20,000th customer and they now have over 3 million. And then they tried selling me something.

Good thing you got past the high-gain amp gas with the purchase of the herbie...right?

I don't know men, the fees don't bother me and it really is a convenience compared to money orders and cashiers checks and long waits. Who the hell would buy a blood splattered home-ade Musikraft guitar from the classified ads in a small town local newspaper? Better yet, who would buy a blood splattered home-ade Musikraft guitar period?
Apparently no one.

Yeah no more GAS for amps....
but the damage has been done. Thru the years Paypal and Ebay has gotten thousands of dollars from me!

Oh well......get what you pay for. ;)
they provided a service.....
and I complain as I pay their bill! :D

Same with me. I send them emails all the time telling them to go get fucked and can't get a rise out of them. They are the biggest scam around. I hate it when I want to buy something from a vendor and their only option is PayPal or PP verification. Get a damn credit card machine if you want to be in business.
