What choice does he got though? Go AWOL and be shot or put in a Russian prison for what would no doubt be an extended stay? Not exactly any appealing choices there. Let's pray for a peaceful resolution to the problem.

Some of 'em surrender to Ukraine if they're smart, but it's not always possible. Robert E. Lee was right when he said war is hell.

I just think of all the societal damage done because of all the wars. People who ain't right mentally when they come back. Or people who don't come back at all, and all the families who suffer or kids that don't get a dad. Or guys coming back all blown and busted up. Or people who come back and turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with the mess they've experienced. Or how about the guys who go out there and blow people to shit with glee and then get an award and sent back into society, often times in a police or other authoritarian role. I think the numerous wars are a big part of why our society is so fractured today.

A friend of mine was in Vietnam, and it seriously messed him up. I remember being at the V.A. Hospital awhile back and I was talking to this guy. He said he'd fought in Vietnam. I thanked him for his service. He said "It's rare that I hear that. Thank you!"

I don't hate all of 'em, just the ones giving the orders and the ones doin' the killing. Why do you ask?
I ask because I wonder what your dog is in the fight. Do you have Ukrainian connections?

I wouldn’t thank your friend for his service, because the armed services don’t serve us but rather our rulers and their corporate backers. In fact the US armed services cause a lot of death and destruction to innocent people around the world. I don’t think obediently killing, destroying and willing to be killed for our psychopathic rulers is particularly virtuous. That being said I think he was brainwashed and victimized by the system so he has my sympathy.

Do you need to have a vested interest to be against totalitarianism?
Russia is marginally — if at all — any more “totalitarian” than the US. Meanwhile Zelensky has suspended elections and is rolling under Marshall law. Fighting age Ukrainians are being conscripted and denied travel visas.

But even if Russia was completely totalitarian, and the “dog” in the fight was simply ideological, is that a good reason to cheer on war, death and destruction?

Kicking the monks from the kiev caves monastery, beating/jailing clergy, and creating a schism in the church pretty much settled it for me.

That's called a National war effort. What's the alternative - let Russia roll over you with their tanks.
It's a losing battle and has been from the start. Zelensky and not to mention the US are needlessly sacrificing those kids for ulterior motives. It's messed up.

A cynical view of it imo.

Vietnam bad. Ukraine good. Same principle for conflict. Media spin is the only difference.

Vietnam was about the communist North Vietnamese Govt fighting against control of the non-communist South Vietnamese. Ukraine on the other hand is not internal to Russia no matter what Putin likes to think.

Zelensky had a peace deal in March of 2022 but tossed it once the west told him to. How long ago would this war have ended if not for US backing? How much territory and Ukrainian lives would have been saved?
