I wouldn’t thank your friend for his service, because the armed services don’t serve us but rather our rulers and their corporate backers. In fact the US armed services cause a lot of death and destruction to innocent people around the world. Zelensky had a peace deal in March of 2022 but tossed it once the west told him to. How long ago would this war have ended if not for US backing? How much territory and Ukrainian lives would have been saved?

Yes but ending the war under your terms would have seen them subsumed and subjugated in the same way Germany rolled over Poland or Russia rolled over Poland and Hungary etc post ww2 for that matter. Doesn't Russia ever give up. Eastern Europe is not rightfully theirs or anyone else's (except for the sovereignty of each individual country) and they (Russia) are not the master race and have no right to subjugate them or form some new bloc with them at the helm.

There is no indication that Russia is trying to subjugate Europe, or even Ukraine for that matter. They are doing exactly what the US would do if Mexico decided to form an military alliance with China. Russia is the sovereign state while the European countries (And Australia BTW) are the vassal states of the US.

There is more to the story, like how the US installed a pro US president in 2014 while the Ukrainians largely wanted neutrality. The war started in 2014. And more to the point, the article doesn't mention that the deal was signed before Boris Johnson/the west got involved and put the kibosh on it, I'm sure with promises of western backing.
