I remember as a kid playing with mud a lot. I mixed some soil with water and let it stand for a few seconds / minutes in a glass and viola! All sorted into clearly-delineated layers. If a kid can figure that part out..

I encourage everyone to try that experiment I did when I was a kid. It's fun, educationamable and of course is the basis upon which those black-and-white-sand floppy things are designed. Quick flip and as the sand settles it makes nice "pretty mountains", and that's just 2 "types" of sand (actually only 1 IIRC, but the black grains' density differs from that of the white's).
