Like so many others, Ace was the reason that I wanted to play guitar. The entire reason that I have been a diehard Les Paul guy for 37 years. Those early Kiss records were rock n roll education for a young guitarist. I got to see him in New Orleans in the early 90s. Killer show. I can't say that I was surprised to hear of his passing. His addictions were well documented. I am still sad that we now live in a world without him.

KISS is the band that got me into hard rock (which got me into metal). The first thing I heard was Rock & Roll Over, which my older sister had on 8-track. I was hooked after that (I think I was in the 3rd or 4th grade). The first album I bought was Double Platinum (on LP). I remember I actually wanted Alive II, but the record store I went to didn't have it. I eventually got all their albums, save for their self-titled and Dressed To Kill, up through Dynasty. I even went as Gene Simmons one year for Halloween. And not just the makeup, but with a wig with the man bun on top, the outfit with the bat wings and chains (that I made out of aluminum foil  ). Everything but the platform shoes. I lost interest in them after Dynasty. I never liked 80's KISS or anything that followed after that.

RIP Ace.

Rock & Roll Over is my favorite studio album. That tour is when I first saw them. It was my first concert, too. Some idiot behind me set fire to my Parka which was draped on my seat. I didn't notice. I kid you not. So, I walk into the house after the concert and my Dad said "HOW DID YOUR COAT CATCH FIRE?!" I was like "Huh? OH!!!"

Sad day. He was truly a legend that inspired countless players to pick up guitars. R.I.P. Ace.

He wasn’t a personal influence to me, but I grew up with KISS music all around me. He was the total rockstar. His style was copied, he influenced many people, that’s all you can ask for as a human being. RIP ACE.
Streaming some KISS tracks right now in tribute

I know many of us have seen this before but still gonna drop this beautiful nugget right here when they were still a tight unit and hungry.

Where do I start???

I got my first KISS album when i was like 7

Ace was my guitar hero. Plain and simple.

This is really tough!

I never thought he would be the first of the original 4 members of KISS to pass away.

It’s especially difficult because Deb and i just went to see Ace on the 4th of July. Front row. It was amazing !!

The first time I saw Ace was in 1990. It was the TROUBLE WALKIN TOUR. Tom Cowels and i went to see Ace at Club Eastbrook in Grand Rapids. Ace wore my hat that night 😊

The next time was in 1994. Harpos in Detroit. Deb and i went. This was the first time i met Ace. We caught him coming out of soundcheck. There was about 6-7 of us waiting for the chance to meet Mighty Ace. He signed my TROUBLE WALKIN poster. I WAS ON CLOUD NINE!!! Deb and I saw Ace again at Harpos soon after.

Then in 1996 Ace got back with KISS for the big ALIVE WORLDWIDE TOUR…..the Epic First Show at TIGERS STADIUM in Detroit !!! Of course i was there. Alice in Chains opened I went with Pete Hawes.

Then Deb and i saw Ace again with KISS at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit.

Got to see Ace with KISS 2 more times before Ace and Peter left KISS for good….on the PSYCHO CIRCUS TOUR and the FAREWELL TOUR….both at Van Andel Arena. 1998 and 2000.

Then the BIG ONE. Saturday December 14, 2019. The Tolken Lounge, Westland, Michigan !!! Ace Frehley LIVE. Tom Cowels and i went to see Ace again….29 years later!!! It was an incredible show. So loud!! I didn’t even have earplugs. I tried to stuff 800mg motrin pills in my ears because thats all i had and i didn’t want to lose our spot in the crowd!!! I almost didn’t get one out of my ear !!! ( tom is laughing at me ). After the show, i met Ace for what would be the last time. That was the night he signed my left shoulder and the next day would become my first tattoo !!!! ABSOLUTE EPIC NIGHT!!

The final curtain for me seeing Ace live ….July 4, 2025. Four Winds Casino, New Buffalo Michigan. DEB AND I….FRONT ROW CENTER!!!! 10,000 Volts Tour !!! Deb and I caught 4 of Aces picks!!! And i caught Aces towel at the end of the show!!! Another EPIC NIGHT!!!

And now he’s gone…

Ace is the reason I picked up a guitar.

Ace is attached to many great memories in my life.

I feel very fortunate to have music, pictures, ticket stubs, autographs and memories !!!

R.I.P. Ace….

That was awesome Brent. Great memories to have.

When I was 10 or so, I bought Alive 2 then got Double Platinum.

Those albums just kicked ass. Rock and Roll.

They certainly had "IT" in the early years with Ace and Peter.
