What do you think about the pickups? DDJ might be a bit too hot for my overall taste. I am considering Bare Knuckle Riff Raff or Rebel Yell. Rebel Yell would be a bit middle of the road while Riff Raff is in the ballpark which I am more used to. I have been curious on Motor City pickups but I would like to get my order in a foreseeable future. If you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Update: I will put a Rebel Yell in the bridge of the LP Custom. Decided to go with physical pedals but for now the amp is not certain. Options:
- Friedman IR-J ( or any other preamp) + Wampler Pedalhead
- Friedman JJ Junior or PT v2 (or any other 20-40 watt head)
- Wizard MTL MKII ( not for the first couple shows for sure)

I found a very good deal on a Friedman 1x12 cab with 16 ohm with G12M Creambacks so thinking about getting it for the stage.

Any other suggestions also welcome!

Why not a Synergy head? either SYN30 or syn20IR?

His live tone is Mesa T4335's in two OS Rectifier 4x12's and a Marshall cab. Not sure what's in that, could be 75's or Marshall Vintages or Greenbacks, 16 ohm.

A stereo power amp and cabs with those speakers or stereo IR's so you have the 8 Ohm Mesa V30 tone and a 16 ohm Marshall tone together should work.

Also you need to do a MJ-era SD Distortion bridge to nail his tone, and a maple neck. The PRS SE Tim Mahoney has the set maple neck and mahogany you need if your LP type has a mahogany neck and won't give you the requisite snap, grind, and clean.

You'll fight with that tone forever if you don't do a maple neck, believe that.

Why don't you buy it and find out? You're fortunate enough to be able to source not only the make and model pickup of his tone, but the winder AND era of production. How could you NOT try it?

Yes a stereo poweramp would be nice to get but the rig gets significantly expensive with that way. I also thought about SYN5050 and two Synergy modules, but it's a bit too much for the current state.

I do not have maaany guitars that is why I do not have the opportunity to make one guitar dedicated for this project. I am used to low-mid output pickups with Alnico magnets, that was my concern with DDJ. If another pickup can get in the same ballpark without and I can use the guitar for the other projects then that's the real win for me.

In EU there is not any available new / used. That is why.

DD’s are ceramic tho.

Does anybody have any experience with Boss DD3 pedals? Would be great to hear DD3 Long Chip vs DD3 vs DD3T vs DD8

I’d go Synergy VH-4 with an LP, hot bridge.

My LP has the trusty JB/Jazz combo, I’d feel well equipped with the VH-4 module.

I know you want a less than giant rig, but I’d be really tempted to run 2 cabs, hell my old ass uses 1x12’s all the time anyway. Be cool to have the 2nd gained up Marshall sound with the Diezel. Power amp would be the toughest part to do to run both without significantly growing the footprint and expense.

you have a 20 watt Marshall head and an extra 1x12 kicking around? Probably not, and I’m probably already going overboard for what your after.
I been running my vh4 with 78 2203 for my Tool tone . And the JB is great with these amps for it

That’s my dream setup of amps for this task as well. For now, we will start slow with direct only so thinking about getting a Friedman IR-X or IR-J, boosting the plexi side with VH4 pedal. Before getting the VH4 pedal I will try the Wizard Leopard boost

both vh4 pedal and wizards boosts are great

I’m very impressed by Wizard Leopard. Sounds great in all settings clean or dirty, the texture is great. Never too harsh or boomy, feels like boosts only the correct frequencies in such a nice way
