I've decided:

Yngwie is the real deal. Unreal.

Lynch is good, but takes up half of the track

Neal Schon is good, but doesn't want to be there

Dio Cries for the children

Rob Halford is awesome

David St. Hubbins is serious

everybody else is pretty much filler.

BTW, David Meniketti from Y+T was pretty damn good too.

Edit: I just noticed Derek Smalls. He didn't have to do much.

Vivian Campbell, IMO, got outplayed by Lynch and Malmstain.

Nugent did nothing.

Malmstein's Serengetis were spectacular.
 
Vocally, Don Dokken can't hang with Dio and Halford, but his clothes could still pass as cool by today's standards. He looks like Rick Springfield or Don Johnson.
 
Brad Gillis from Nightranger is awesome, but I just don't feel him on this track.
 
I dig Dokken's vocal style, 1:49 is pure rock and roll.

As for stand-out performances on the guitar:

Yngwie: You said it best, unreal.
Lynch: Awesome as always.
Craig Goldie: Underrated on this track, I think he puts in a great performance.

Was wondering that myself ! He put as much of himself in that as ANYONE THERE! Man, I sure miss queensryche with Degarmo !!!!! Heard he is doing a lot of flying, he's supposed to be a heck of a pilot. -RAGE FOR ORDER- playing as we speak!

Goldy kicks butt on Stars!! The waterfall of notes he churns out on his 2nd(?) solo is great. But Yngwie rules. Just rules. He plays the instrument so effortlessly...

I love the little bar lick he does at 2:26, pretty cool.
 
I think Meniketti pwns the majority of the lead players and should have played a solo too.
 
I still think Schon tore it up. I enjoyed his solos the best on this.
Of course YJM always rips.


But DO NOT count out Eddie Ojeda from TS! HE ROCKS!!!!! :rawk: :m17: :D
 
After 20 years, the "the guitarists" segment is still so entertaining. For me, Yngwie demonstrated that he was still in another league, but I was surprised at how good Craig Goldy came across. Of course he ended up in DIO a few months later.

My personal favorite was George Lynch and that chaotic style that seemed so unorthodox. That was probably the high point of his career (for me). After that he just got to wanky and unfocused with his solos. I definitely think he was the most impressive after yngwie.

Second favorite to watch is Carlos Cavazo. While he's several notches below everyone, it looks like he doesn't care and is having a good time.

Meniketti probably couldn't stop talking long enough to lay down a solo.

Then, there was Brad in his wife beater outfit. Good guitarist but his whammy stuff was starting to sound contrived. He seemed like he was trying to show-off or something.

Eddie Ojeda...yikes.

Dave Murray...where's the beer?

Buck Dharma...good melodic solo and he connects everything so well.
 
Actually, after much thought, Buck Dharma sounded pretty badass.

He tore it up, and totally had his own sound, vibe, style, etc.

I was thinking about this. The average listener could probably only pick out three guitarists from this track, Yngwie, Lynch and Brad. Pretty much everyone else is thrashing out pentatonics as fast as they can. Maybe Brad was playing up to this?
