It’s not a perfect analogy since the gap between a iii and c+ is way bigger and there are many other differences, but I think you get the basic idea
 
We wouldn’t like a song anymore or less regardless of which of these amps were used

Soundwise, is the main difference that the JMPs are a bit softer, smoother, sweeter while the 800's have a sharper mid focus and punch harder while the gain levels are more or less the same?

Been awhile, but if I remember right, the 03’s went from 6 caps to 3 at some point.
 
'71 sounds best to me, '73 and '76 are very similar. But I can see how some poeple hear it like 'the same'. But these are the ones i take serously when comes to gear talk :ROFLMAO:

They did, yes. But perhaps the cap values and method of wiring (series vs parallel) changed as well. So a reduction of 3 caps wouldn't necessarily mean less filtering.
 
He’s ears could fried from all those years of loud Marshalls . I know mine are lol

Just looked at a scematic and there are only 3 50/50 caps shown. 2 in the power section and one in the preamp.

He should play the three amps with the same tubes.

I agree. I’ve probably not tried as many as you or Tom, but IME JMP’s have had consistently to me more growl which I interpret as in a way more aggressive and a warmer, richer sound. I remember 800’s sounding generally brighter, harder, sometimes a little brittle, and didn’t like the comparatively less growl on chords. To me was more in the direction of Wizards in that sense, but I did have an early ‘80’s JCM800 2204 modded by Monomyth that sounded very good. I think it played to the donor amp’s strengths because it was tight, punchy and sizzly, but not the richest sound
