Ahhh ok...
That makes sense then. I have a JB and a '59 in mine. It's anything but sterile... but I don't play clean much.

yeah I'd liek to try a 59

It sounds amazing in that guitar. I don't know what's different about the regular '59 vs the one in the Edwards. Maybe it's the cover? I dunno, but it sounds AWESOME!

I have a SD Jazz in the neck of my LP custom, its very nice, has that classic warm buttery les Paul neck tone. It splits okay. When I strated a thread a while back the SD '59 was also recommended alot for the neck.

I do like the Gibson 490R as well, those are pretty cheap used, but hard to find if you want the 4 conductor version to be able to split it.

I know what you mean about the neck sounding a bit modern, that is the way I fell about the Suhr Aldrich neck pickup in my other Les Paul Standard. It gets a nice clean, but just doesn't have the chime or warmth of the Jazz or 490R. It does handle gain well. I bet your neck SH6 is pretty similar.

Do they have nitro or poly finish?

The one Joey has is not nitro & IMO it doesn't sound close to 70s Gibsons. Now the 98LTC, which is the one with nitro finish, sounds pretty damn close, however doesn't look that cool.
