AMAZING new microphone day! Sm57 killer? Quite possibly!

After listening to colin Richardsons tonehub pack, something new and unique captured my ear. What the heck is that tone? I’ve never heard this color from a microphone before!?

The Austrian audio OC18.

Austrian audio for those who don’t know, is a byproduct of the unfortunate closing of the AKG factory. quite a few AKG employees left after the closing and formed Austrian audio. And I have to say, they make some absolutely amazing stuff.

Colin’s tones In his pack were going to be awesome regardless, but this thing really struck me. And I was more than impressed. The big boy version of this, the OC818, is exactly the same mic but has some innovative features that allow you to change the polar pattern of the mic even AFTER you have already recorded the track. Yea, really crazy stuff. These guys are doing things to say the least.

Well, I decided I needed one, as I don’t have a condenser as it is period. And I am more than impressed. This thing is dead simple to place: put it on the center of the damn cone and go. It’s going to sound amazing.

Here’s a few clips. Don’t shoot me, I haven’t used a condenser by itself since , never. This thing has ALOT of low end, with fantastic midrange , and enough attack and high end to be used by itself without a 57. These clips have absolutely NO eq other than a high and low pass, so keep that in mind. Enjoy !

Yeah, no! At $800.00 +, I'll take a 57.

Considering a condenser of this quality is easily double the price, from that perspective it’s a steal. I realize it’s expensive if you look at it just from that perspective, I get it trust me. But, im
Always personally looking for new tones and nes flavors that work just as well as my Unidyne 57s on its own, and this is the closest I’ve found yet!

I hate to tell you Glenn and others have been hyping these for a while lol, I was set to get one till I found a TLM102 locally super cheap.

Yea I saw Glenn’s video on it as well, it sounded great on there too I thought! I call it like I see it, if I agree with him on something so be it! He loves the IGS 500 series stuff as well, and that’s all that’s in my 500 rack as well. So he’s not TOTALLY tone deaf ;)

Sounded good man, it’s cool to find a new toy and get new fun sounds from it. Think we’ve all been there. But just think how it would be even better with an upgraded mic pre !!

I agree! Except, it doesn’t get any better than what I Have in my opinion: 2 BAE 1073’s :)

I legit wanna hear that Rev F With the Mesa cab in a full mix, I think that’s gonna slay

Yea I thought it sounded really great! Lots of attack in the high end and plenty of clarity in the midrange, I’ll do one sooner or later, I really do love this thing so far.

Pulled out my Engl cab because I really was excited to hear the creamback 65 with this thing, and it did not disappoint!

Morin modded Marshall
Peppers dirty tree
BAE 1073
AA OC18
Engl 4x12
Creamback 65
Chinese V30 8 Ohm ( on the V30 clip)

Keep in mind, the V30 sounds harsher, but it’s also much louder than the creamback, I did not level adjust these, so don’t let your ears trick you. The V30 still sounds great, it just sounds more spikey for sure compared to the creamback, but it would be great in a mix.

Apples and oranges.
SM57 is a dynamic mic.

….. yes I’m aware, but there are tons of dynamic mics that don’t hold a candle to the 57 for high gain guitars in my opinion. And also the point of this was the fact that LDC’s are often not used in metal for a number of reasons, and this one is phenomenal for it. The sm57 is often used by itself for great metal tones , something most mic’s can’t accomplish, especially condensers, but this mic can as well. These are all the reasons for the comparisons to the 57.
