After listening to colin Richardsons tonehub pack, something new and unique captured my ear. What the heck is that tone? I’ve never heard this color from a microphone before!?
The Austrian audio OC18.
Austrian audio for those who don’t know, is a byproduct of the unfortunate closing of the AKG factory. quite a few AKG employees left after the closing and formed Austrian audio. And I have to say, they make some absolutely amazing stuff.
Colin’s tones In his pack were going to be awesome regardless, but this thing really struck me. And I was more than impressed. The big boy version of this, the OC818, is exactly the same mic but has some innovative features that allow you to change the polar pattern of the mic even AFTER you have already recorded the track. Yea, really crazy stuff. These guys are doing things to say the least.
Well, I decided I needed one, as I don’t have a condenser as it is period. And I am more than impressed. This thing is dead simple to place: put it on the center of the damn cone and go. It’s going to sound amazing.
Here’s a few clips. Don’t shoot me, I haven’t used a condenser by itself since , never. This thing has ALOT of low end, with fantastic midrange , and enough attack and high end to be used by itself without a 57. These clips have absolutely NO eq other than a high and low pass, so keep that in mind. Enjoy !
