Amp "farty"

fired up for a few minutes last night...amp was "farty" (distorted/flubby). Even cut out switching to neck PUP from bridge. Did it in and out of loop, with two diff guitars, and cords.

Preamp or power amp?

If the amp has a loop: plug guitar into its return and have a listen.
Farty: poweramp
not farty: preamp

Also worth mentioning, as the amp warmed up, the farting cooled down. Failed to include that nugget when listing the symptoms.

My six month old Friedman Smallbox started sounding like farty mush. It happened over a period of time. Then it started crackling and then I knew something wasn't right. Slapped the top of the amp with my palm and the crackling got worse. Put a new set of preamp tubes in there and it was back to its full glory.

a couple preamps would be cheaper and easier to swap than the big'ns... may try that first
