hi guys need some help here.

I noticed a few guys on this board have some experience with the Ampeg vh 140-c and i need some guidance about some issues im having with a used 2x12 combo i just bought.

Everything sounds like mud on the gain channel. EVERYTHING. the only way ive gotten any semblance of a decent high gain lead tone out of this thing is by turning the treb to 10 and the mid and bass to 1... then its starts to sound a little bit like a normal amp. Gain never leaves 3 btw.

clean channel sounds beautiful though when tweaked right.

ok so what do i do about all this? Is the mud normal? i cant imagine the way everyone raves about this amp the way it sounds right now, i mean ive heard a 15 watt traynor dyna-something sounds better than this...

help me plz!

sounds to me like you have a seller/buyer issue.

theres nothing anyone can do here on a forum - you need a technician for an electrial issue inside an amplifier. it doesnt sound like a tube issue.

did the buyer tell you something was wrong with it before you bought it?

theres too many unknown variables in your new member/rant/post to even suggest helpful pathways for you to follow.

first suggestion would be to find out if he knew about any issues BEFORE it was sold to you. if he says yes - then he is liable for all repair costs for not giving you all of the details up front. OR - you are in favor of a refund and he gets his broken amplifier back.

if he says it isnt his fault and it worked fine - then im hoping you had it shipped via a shipping company. both of you need to make a damage claim - but even if you had it shipped you needed to have it fully insured and packaged properly. theres alot of if's in this statement alone.

if in fact you bought it through him and picked it up yourself - i hope you tried it first before buying it blind. otherwise - it looks like you pretty much got fucked with a nice repair bill. best thing to do is talk it out with the seller and reach an agreement between both of you for getting either a refund or the amplifier fixed on his part.

if you bought it broken for a discounted price... well then you are liable for repair costs - theres nothing an online gear forum is going to do for you.

i hpe you get the chance to stick around RT and didnt come here milking for info. to any regards best of luck on your situation. theres alot of do's and donts and questions that need to be asked before hand so problems like this can easily be resolved.

take care.

I have owned several VH140C's and they are killer amps for metal...if they are working properly.

You might not want to hear what I am about to tell you though.

The VH140C is a stereo amp. It has 2 70 watt amps in it. When one of them starts to go, everything goes to shit. I had that same problem with a few of them.

The solution? I am afraid there isn't one. You could find a tech to install a new power amp and use the preamp....I wish I could give you a magical way to fix but the fact is, they are old amps......I know this doesn't help but if you want that tone look for an Ampeg SS150 head.

thanks to japetus for a decent and informative reply unlike some other clowns who like to hear themselves type and waste everyones time... but then i knew what i was getting into with a bunch of pompous wannabe rock stars on this forum.

anyhow, i paid 250$ for it online at music go round the upside? im just running a daw through the power amp, and its loud enough to cover what i wanted anyway. its too bad i have to run a computer through it, but in the end it beats shelling more money for eq's and pedals, and im loud enough to gig.

i would have like to have heard what this thing could have done so i could recommend it to my rhythm player but whatever. i'll make a phone call and fi d out about refunds tomorrow. but in the end im not SOL here, 250 is nothing.

thanks japetus.

your welcome. glad you have such an amazing sense of humor and im-maturity level to stomp around the forum with an attitude like yours.

there was nothing wrong with the information i gave - if you find it uninformative, then it would have been nice to hear this second reply's information in the original topic so everyone could better understand your situation.

its people like you that remind me why i refuse to work retail. why ask for help then bitch when someone gives it?

Dude was just trying to help..... granted he got some of it wrong, but still was trying to help, and he wasted YOUR time? Now all the sudden the whole forum is full of pompous wannabe rock stars?

Why the fuck did you even register, if thats your opinion of this place? go back to HC or UG wherever you came from. Jeez, got attitude?

you are only making youself look like an ass.

i have done nothing to you - and you continue to act immature.

your own mouth is your problem - i will not stoop to your level and start bashing on a forum - its like trying to win a retarted olympics game.

ive been around this forum alot longer yes - but i think as soon as you saw my post count you immediately went into deffensive mode, and thus decided to take a bad day of a broken amplifier out on someone else.

as i will borrow from another member,

"go fuck yourself. have a nice day."

Just thought it was rediculous, dude asks for help, you offered, he flips out..... :lame: :loco:

I find it pretty disturbing and unfortunate to know that you came asking a bunch of "pompous rock star wannabes" for help on something you obviously don't know anything about. You probably couldve gotten some good info too if you wouldve waited longer than 1 or 2 posts to stick your foot in your mouth.... :dunno:

he for some reason edited the first post. he was calling me personally a pompous whatever - and changed it to a forum full of them.

IMHO he would have been better off to leave it aimed at me.

i wish you could have seen the "nvm" edited post - it was chocked full of goodies. guy was pretty wack.

Lmao I personally just wouldn't ask a bunch of people for help when I already have a preconceived notion about them all being fools and douchebags   plus what would that make me for seeking their help?

If hes an electronics engineer he should build the classic Ampeg SVT.

SVT transformers available here: http://www.mercurymagnetics.com/pages/mainframe.htm

schematics below. that should be all your friend need to build it. hell obviously have to source the rest of the parts.

i cant believe that guy believes he can automatically tell anyone off he wants, just because he created the topic
