The Axe-Fx did show up! Tonight was the first night I got to mess with it. The Deliverance model sounds pretty close to the tone I'm getting with the Pittbull...I use the green channel though.

Couldn't agree more on the VH4 and VHT!!!!!
I have owned 4, yes FOUR VH4's because I REALLY wanted to like them. I'm a Hetfield fanboy and since he plays one...
But Poo is Poo. I also owned a couple Herberts and while I liked them better than the VH4, I can name A LOT of amps I'd rather own.
VHT's on the other hand are some of my favorite amps! I have owned several versions, from Classics to a 50/12/212 to CL's (the green channel is my favorite VHT tone) to CLX's to UL's. All of them were awsome. I think the VHT tone is sort of a cross between a Mark series Mesa aand Hiwatt. BADASS.
Never played a Friedman of any kind but would like to.
On a side note....I am down to two amps. First time on probably 20 years.
What are the two amps you might ask?
Henning Cherry Bomb...IMHO the best Marshall based amp ever made. All bow down to Steve Henning!

VHT was sick, I really need to get hold of a UL one of these days. There's one for sale but has no EQ and dude wants almost $2k for it. Nope, not when I saw them going for $1400 here during the last wave. Wonder if I can talk Corpse out of one...
I'd like to compare the Friedmans against the Cherry Bomb, think that'd be a blast. Steve's amps are cheaper too, IIRC.

I'm a VH4 owner & I run overdrives out front pretty much full time. That's the only way i've found to get the amp to really scream. The gain is much too transparent. It doesn't have a defining high gain sound in the way a Nitro, 5150 or or SE+ does.
I think that's what I like about it though. Because it doesn't have any extreme qualities, it marries with outboard equipment really well. On it's own, it's a pretty dry amplifier. I can certainly see why people don't agree with it.

That was pretty much my experience with the only VH4 I've ever played, I was a bit disappointed, but I only had about 45 minuites with it.
It was pretty stiff feeling. I thought it got a smidge better with some serious volume, but still was a bit dissapointed. The best Mesa I ever heard was a Tremoverb, I dont know what the difference in the circuits are, but it was noticably better than the Dual Recs I played for years.

It's validating to hear your reviews of the VH4 and the Friedman. I posted my findings of the VH4 back during the days of the HCAF, and I felt like I had to double up on my flamesuit too!
I went to GC that happened to have a VH4 in (this was back when Hetfield first started using one), and I was fully prepared to take it home to replace my Triple Rectifier. I took my Triple Rec to GC as a possible trade in for the VH4, and ended up playing it next to the VH4, and I liked my old Triple Recto better! I was worried that maybe my ears were fatigued or something, so I tried it again the next day and that confirmed that the VH4 wasn't for me. I was shocked.
There's quite a few guys that can get great tones out of them, but with the Triple I had, the cleans sounded fatter and deeper, and the VH4's channel 3 was my favorite gain channel, and I liked the tone and feel of my Triple better. I wasn't a big fan of the VH4's channel 4...it just seemed to miss some of the dynamics I wanted, and it felt fuzzy and less articulate than even my Triple, and I wasn't going to spend $4,750 on an amp just for a 4th channel I wouldn't use.
I absolutely love the Friedman HBE/BE amps. I even contacted Dave 6 or so months ago to mod a Marshall I have, but I never heard back from him (he said I should wait a few months before sending an amp to him), so that leaves me with buying a Friedman off the showroom floor. The tone from his amps are amazing, but my hesitation comes from the price tag. I just can't convince myself to spend that much on an amp.

Diezels used to be my favorite amps. I guess my tastes just grew out of them. Still wish I had a VH4 sitting around just to have. Lol my buddy Flavatrocious has one so I could play his if I got the urge.
Seems my current aresenal of amps lines up with most of the feelings in this thread. lol My UL is my favorite, but the QR with KT88s I just got from Steve K is pretty awesome too

Dude you need to grab a Deliverance. One channel of awesome. Some say its the best of all their offerings and they're probably the cheapest on the used market, usually under 1K. When you find one. Yeah, really hard to judge an amp without spending some serious time with it. And with what these amps cost, hard to spend that much cash without really knowing its for you. My first SLO I was kind of meh with it at first. But after reading up on pre tube preferences and trying out different preferred eq settings I liked it. Man, I'm just sayin' VH4 are not on A LOT of records because they suck. Biggest tip, preamp volumes need to be noon or higher(look at any famous user and you will see HIGH pre volumes on damn near all of a rig pic), master at least 9/10:30. Don't go to extremes with any of the other dials other then the mids noon or more on the mids. If you like it super clear treb up a bit on the channel and presence noon or lower... Higher presence will actually make it fuzzier and newer vh4 have ALOT OF PRESENCE ON TAP. IMO is not meant to be a bright amp but set up right will CUT through anything. It's a great amp, it's just like a mark series boogie... The eq has some ground rules. It definitely is not traditional in terms of its break up and feel so yeah there will be some bias. If you're a clean player you'll love it because it lets every nuance out. I'm not a rich fellow and the only time personally I've gotten rid of mine was to try something new for grins and immediately regret and and scrambled to get cash to buy one back. Friedmans are really awesome though just to add, wish I could own both... Someday.

Also yeah as Rez said don't go silly on the pickup output. Play Palm mutes and adjust the gain you'll hear a point when the lows compress, when you get there back it off a tiny bit and that's how you match you pickups. And keep the amp a little more "open"
