Can anyone tell me the difference between these two mods? I've heard the clip for the hairy brown eye mod and loved it. Haven't heard any clips of the Angry Hippie but am curious how it compares.

Is it possible to put both of these mods in the same amp and make them switchable?

i'm guessing that since dave can't do the angry hippy (or hungry hippo) on the randall modules, it involves a few poweramp tweaks.

i'm sure dave could mod a donkey to sound good, so i'm sure he can put them in the same marshall with no problem

I don't have the Brown eye, but I can tell you that the HBE and Custom 45 are some killer mods to the SL2 and EG3/4 respectively. The HBE is a very cool Sykes / Slash / Black Crowes / Zakk Wylde type of vibe. Can do AC/DC level of gain and more on ChA, and Slash and Wylde levels of gain on ChB. Friggin tight, bitey, but not ice picky at all. I LOVE this module. Made my SL2 sound like THE BEST marshall tone I've always wanted to hear. Removes some of the smoothness that Bruce is known for (which I love in some modules), but I didn't like in the SL2. I wanted a more mean sounding Marshall tone, and dave has nailed it with the HBE. I know the voicings from BE to HBE are really similar, so with a dual Channel modded SL2 being a HBE, you'll be fine honestly. The custom 45, takes the stock EG3/4 tone and takes that blanket off of it. It's still smooth, warm, and lush, but it has a character in the upper mids / highs that I LOVE. It's still very cool for rhythms and works VERY well with modulation (since it doesn't have a lot of high end bite) which makes the modulation effects sound really lush and not harsh. Soloing with the EG3/4 is like a DREAM! It's the Marshall solo tone I've wanted for a LONG time, but has always eluded me.

I did have Dave mod my EG5 too. Take the EG5, and add more muscle to it, and not make it as nasally in the high end. The low mids are whats changed...and I'll tell you...it still can get SLO sounding...not exactly like a SLO, but close enough...and then it also can get very heavy sounding with those SUPER TIGHT and SUPER PUNCHY low mids and lows. VERY DIFFERENT from the lows of the HBE. Especially awesome lows and low mids when you run the bass boost on 1 or 2.

I LOVE my mods by Dave, and he's really helped me realize the tones I wanted from Eggie all a long. Bruce has made a KILLER package to be able to allow us all of those killer tones, and Dave has tweaked them to my personal ear. A match made in heaven!

Nice description Eric. I am really intrigued about the C45 mod. I love the EG3/4, but if the C45 mod is anything like the click they recorded, I'm gonna have to get it. Did the mid frequencies get changed alot in this mod?
How bout some clippage on these?>? Please

If work wasn't kicking my ass...I would have had tons recorded. I worked nearly 75-80 hours this week, and I'm beat. I will do my best to record some stuff before I leave next week on business.

The recording though is pretty close. I don't think the mids changed "that much" except in the upper mids and highs. Definitely changes for the better IMHO. But I never really liked the "blanket effect" that the original EG3/4 has on it. Never really suited me. Even w/ the 500pf cap, it helped, but Dave's mods really helped out more.

I never heard the Angry Hippie....but the Hairy Brown eye is THE BEST Marshall tone I have played to date. Very 'like Dave said' VICIOUS sounding! really a mean sounding CRUNCH tone. It just bumped out my Dave modded Mr. Scary to the TOP spot in my RM100.....and I love that mod.
Hell....I love all 6 of my Mr. David Friedman Modded/tricked out Modules!! :D
Said it before....say it again....Dave works some MAGIC MOJO on the mods. Thats what I like about the work he does. Takes a good amp and tone....and makes it GREAT and suited perfectly for what I play. Wouldnt trade my tone for NOTHING!
Long road and THOUSANDS of bucks in amps just to find the grail of Tones. Check into it.....you wont regret. :2thumbsup:

Eric - you say you got the HBE but not the BE. What channel did you have modded on SL2? Did you have both modded or just one to the HBE? I'm a really curious about this mod because I love SL2, but dislike it at the same time for the reasons you have put forth, mainly, just a little bit too smooth. I want it to be a little meaner/looser.

I'm really looking forward to clips when work isn't kicking your ass.

I had more gain added to channel A,which to me is insane, less compressed more dry in a sence and meaner more aggressive, and the B side is tighter ,and meaner less smooth but great definition,it just rocks!!!

I have the Brown Eye on my 71' - 100 watt Marshall and it's the meanest yet musical amp I've ever heard. Been using it all day today with my sunburst Standard with a WCR Godwood in the bridge, just stunning, the perfect blend of sag and articulation. Yummy!

Thats awesome!! Dave has my Custom 45 with him right now and is doing some mods to it. All this talk gets me more and more excited.

Wow, that Custom 45 mod sounds real interesting. I have an old single channel EG3 that I would never change but I'm thinking about having some clarity added to my EG3/4.
