Anybody on here have experience with Frankenstraat? I ordered a body and neck from him in the beginning of January this year, and I'm still waiting for it to arrive!

First of all, the purpose of this thread is not to bash James, or to make him look bad, let that be clear!!

On his site, it says that necks ships within 4-6 weeks, and bodies within 2-4 weeks, unless otherwise noted. So I placed my order, payed, and sent a mail with specs... All was good, and In the end of March, I received an automated reply saying all kits will be shipping within a couple of weeks. James had some personal issues, I believe, so production of kits were stopped for a while. Nothing happens. From then, and till now, I've been promised that the kit would ship 4 or 5 times, the last being now the 13th of September. I replied, and asked for a tracking number, as I've done before, but I still haven't heard anything. Obviously, it still hasn't shipped. Generally, communication is very, very poor. Getting updates from him without sending mails, is impossible. I was promised pictures on several occations, but the pictures never found their way to my inbox, without me sending mails asking for them over and over again. A lot of empty promises, I'd say... To bad, because I really like his work, and the kits looks amazing!
Calling is not an option, as I'm in Norway. All of this is something that doesn't exactly make me want to use him again, for other bodies/necks...

One thing is the fact that this is taking so bloody long.... I can understand that, he obviously have shitloads of other stuff to do, but he's basically been telling me my kit will ship, since April. That's almost 6 months! And besides, I've watched dozens of eBay auctions for necks/bodies go through, and getting shipped out. That's kinda frustrating, seeing as I payed for my kit NINE months ago!

I've been hesitant to make a topic on this, as I understand it can be seen as bashing, or something... I have no intent of making James (Frankenstraat) look bad, as said above, but to put it this way: If I had not known he had made bodies and necks for a lot of people, I'd believe I was being scammed. This is just not the correct way to do business, and leaves a pretty bad impression, IMO.

Any feedback would be appreciated (especially from people that have experience with buying from him). :aww:

The thing is, my kit is actually finished, I've seen pics of it, but it never ships

I posted this question before and somebody on here who I don't remember, said he had a bad experience. He mentioned, he had to take it in to have additional work done as the neck was not finished and things did not fit together. He did say they he waited forever. So, I stayed away. The cool thing about this forum is somebody on here has tried just about everything out there. I hope everything works out for you.

As you can clearly see, this guy is fucked up. He screwed me around so bad on a neck I bought from him... His site at the time I bought it made it seem like necks were in stock and ready to ship. I finally got the piece of shit he called a neck six months later after some of the nastiest emails I have ever written to anyone. He never answered any. Finally, I called him out on his stupid message board and he banned me, deleted my posts and then finally responded to one of my emails. I eventually got my neck, which was only rough sanded, the wrong nut width, etc. It was a piece of shit that I had to have another builder shape properly into an actual guitar neck.

I know you didn't want to bash James (who would with nothing in hand and a large outlay in cash to him), so allow me. Fuck you, James and fuck your bullshit "business"... I've put up with a lot from custom builders, but this guy, Christopher Woods and the Monster Guitar Shop guy are the biggest piece of shit ripoff artists ever...

Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure, but these are the facts...

Yeah... I know of a lot of people that have gotten their stuff, and it has been excellent, so I hope what I ordered is good!

Well fuck me...

Sorry man... This whole problem is very common with custom builders. I am unbelievably patient and all I ask is honesty - I even understand personal problems for small builders, but most have no integrity and have no understanding of how to treat customers and run a business. Honestly, the only ones I have had good experiences with have been:

Michael Charvel - This guy is a fucking prince of a man. He has ALWAYS given me correct timeframes and delivered. Always excellent quality, great guitars, beautiful wood, great paint work. He is honest about what he can do and what he can't and what he can get wood-wise... You want to talk about standing behind your product? I had one of his guitars and the gold in the finish started to turn green. This was a FULL YEAR after the warranty expired. He took the guitar back and BUILT ME A BRAND NEW GUITAR of my choosing FOR FREE. Are you fucking kidding me? He could have told me to fuck off, but instead, he stepped up BIG TIME. This guy will always get business and recommendations from me.

Lee Garver - Some people think the guy can be rude, but I know him and I know how many emails and phone calls he fields everday from people who never buy anything from him and waste a lot of his time wanting to chat about guitars. He is just busy, so if he seems curt, it is because if he wasn't, he'd never get anything done. He has always quoted reasonable timeframes, given me updates when I asked and generally treated me like a customer should be treated. One guitar I waited a year and 6 months for, but it required an intricate abalone inlay that took nearly a year for his inlay guy to get to. He kept me updated, offered me options to do something different, whatever I wanted. I chose to wait and I was rewarded with great work. The guitars he has made for me have always been killer... When you pay for something like 5A birdseye maple necks, you GET IT. Not half ass wood pawned off as 5A... NO bullshit from Lee, great guy... nothing but good things to say about him...

John Suhr - I've had one custom Suhr built for me to my exact specs. I was told it would take 3 months and I got it in 3 months. It was perfect, exactly as ordered. What else can you ask for?

So there you go... You see, I'm not the "angry customer" guy who is impatient, never satisfied, etc. I'm just a regular guy trying to get a custom guitar built to my specs. I know that takes a long time for 1-2 man shops. I can wait six months, even a year if I'm told up front... What I don't want is lies, bullshit delivery timeframes that are exceeded again and again, no updates, no communication, having my emails and phone calls ignored and finally receiving crap quality... THAT is unacceptable and that is what I seem to see from many custom builders...

Eh, I actually got my kit today!
Haven't been able to check it out yet....

How typical, one day after I make a topic, whining about this, I get my kit...

Excellent - I hope it is everything you hoped for after 9 months of waiting...

Got the body and neck today. I payed for a OFR aswell, but that wasn't in the package... So I'll ask for a refund of the $200 that cost.

Other than that, the body does not have a heel contour, as I specifically asked for... Neither did I receive a cavity cover for the electronics cavity.

Holes in the neck for mounting it is not drilled, neither is the holes for the screws that hold the trem-claw.

I'll keep ya posted!

you know what? FUCK THAT ASSHOLE! theres no reason after waiting 9 months, that your order should be fucked up. i would demand a refund .good luck bro

GOD THAT PISSES ME OFF!
