Any point in upgrading to a Babyface?

Right now I'm using a POS M-Audio to track my guitar/bass. I'm using my Kemper and going all spdif....my question is, will I notice a huge difference if I upgrade to a RME Babyface?

If you ever decide to record through the xlr ins for something, then it would be worth upgrading....I'd pass on a Babyface though. I had one and didn't like it at all.

I don't think you would notice a difference with SPDIF though. You are transferring data.

You may notice something on the DA side for monitoring. If I were in your shoes I'd look more into the SPL Crimson. Similar price as the RME and I've heard nothing but great things about it.

Unfortunately it's not expandable, I'll need 8+ inputs at some point.

The Audient id22 may suit your needs then. I'm not sure it has SPDIF, but it can expand to 10 inputs via ADAT.

What do you think about the Steinberg UR824? It'd sync well with Cubase.
I need spdif

On the flip side....if I won't notice a difference between the spdif on m fast track pro and a much nicer unit....then I'll pass for now.

I have the ur28m and it works very well with Cubase. If I needed more inputs the the ur824 would definitely been on my list and I would probably be very pleased.

The SPDIF inputs probably don't have much of an effect on your tone on the way in, but monitoring your playback could be a lot better. That side of the recording chain is at least as important as the input side.

I think I've read that some of the Steinberg interfaces were actually made by rme, not sure on which ones, but worth a look for sure. I can't recommend rme enough though, I've had a fireface 800 since April or so and I have had zero issues with it. Rme also just released a new version of total mix that is compatible with the 800, which is a ten year old interface, so product support after the fact is great. Rme drivers are the best in the industry too imo.

I had a Fireface 800 until from 2008 up until a couple months ago. I can't recommend highly enough, but my recording projects slowed down considerably and it was just too much interface. I sold it, bought the ur28m and pocketed the rest.

The Fireface UC might be a great option. USB connectivity, which is great since Firewire is dead, expandable to 18 ins and outs, has SPDIF connections, and has all the stability and quality you'd expect from RME. The only downside is that it costs about double the ur824.

What didn't you like?

I actually think I'm going to go with the UR824, as I use Cubase, it has 8 inputs, adat capability, spdif, and I hear the preamps and converters are top notch!
