About 20 years ago i was reading an article on Eddie Van Halen and he used the term brown sound
to describe his tone, which made sense for some reason, even as a young lad i was thinking it was
kinda cool.
Was it Ed? Or did somebody else come up with that term?
Just curious,i know alot of you cats seem to up on useless info like that, not that that's a bad
thing.

I know I have read who coined it....But i am pretty sure it wasn't eddie. I can't remember if I found it on Legendary Tones, or on the Metro Boards?

I believe it was Ed, but he was talking in reference to Alex's snare sound at the time... true.

Probably someone who had 1 to many burrito's for lunch.

+1 = That was it, but I think he was referring to the sound of Alex's entire "kit", not just his snare ....

Ok,couple of poop replies, which leads me to believe theres some gayness confusion.

It may have been Steven Rosen - one of the writers for Guitar World magazine. I remember several articles by him in the mid '80's, and for whatever reason, I remember that I really hated his journalistic style. In that era it seemed like he had an eddie interview in every other magazine, but there was nothing interesting about his questions. Almost like he didn't play guitar. Shortely thereafter, I remember GW started printing a lot of articles by JD Considine and other Rolling Stone writers who didn't play guitar. The wrote a lot of stuff about "music" but not necessarily from a guitarists standpoint. And then, GW got really bad and started cover stories with the entire band (like REM, RHCP, Limp Bizkit, etc...) as the focal point.

Well, I rambled. Maybe the link helps...

Alright I might be wrong but I'm like 99.9% sure it refers to Keith Richards tone on the song brown sugar. I read that a few years back so I figured I'd share. I'd think some of the old timers should be able to validate that

EDIT: I believe I've failed miserably. I know I read that but I don't know where but I did just find an article talking about eddie naming his tone the brown sound lol.

I think some of you other guys might be thinking about the brown note :hys:

That's how I remember the phrase being coined.

Seems Ed 'coined' a few things in his time.

This is the story I've always heard, as well. Like all things Van Halen related, I take it with a rather large grain of salt :D

I thought it was said by Alex when talking about Ed's sound ?

i remember he also credited his dad as having a brown tone on his clarinet and you know pops steered him to play MUSIC instead of just trying to steal Jimmy page licks

the planets definitely aligned for that guy

dad is a pro musician on a soloist instrument, brother is a drummer, took classical piano, grew up on Clapton and Hendrix and Page and uli and Blackmore and Perry and holdsworth

hung out with Jose and charvel for gear formulation

had Randy and lynch to push him locally

had Roth as a frontman

was discovered by gene simmons, Ted t and the head of Warner bros

and lucks into an interview with jas obrecht for gtr player mag that really help him become the cat to watch

I've never understood the brown sound. If I were going to assign a color to tone, his tone sounded more brown to me in the 1984-OU812 era. His early stuff would be more like navy blue, or perhaps a dark green.

:)

I hated that tone, when he changed amps i thought that was the worst idea, imo.
To me it sounded like his amp was wearing a nose plug.

I'm following most of what you said except "lucks into an interview". Was his first interview with Guitar Player, the cover story? or was there a shorter interview earlier in his career?
