Mangini is a good choice IMO. He seemed by far the most stoaked too, so good for him. I think he'll be MUCH better than Portnoy.

I don't get the Petrucci hate here. I don't know how you can play guitar and not like him. The guy is an absolute beast and his riffs have a wicked groove to them. I do think Rudess has got to go though. He's an amazing player, but he just does far too much and takes the cheese factor up to 11. They need to at least make him tone it down several notches.

DT are one of my favorite bands, but I can see why some people don't like them. People who say Petrucci sucks baffle me though.

I agree. It's rock hard to have a keyboard player that doesnt add a touch of cheese though isn't it?
Well, the whole band is cheesy. It's just the type of music they play. Plus, any band that has James LaBrie as a singer is going to be cheesy as fuck   . Getting rid of Rudess wouldn't make them not cheesy. I actually think the albums before Metropolis are their most cheesy albums. I just think Rudess is too much. In a rock/metal band, keyboards should be there just to add atmosphere. They shouldn't be as up front as the guitars.

I liked half the stuff before metropolis.. there was one tanker in there though but i don't remember what it was. I still love AWAKE though. Kick ass. I am not a huge Petrucci fan BUT he is a monster player and deserves credit for it. Erotomania was incredible.. how anyone would say he is garbagge is beyond me. Now the dudes in Dragon Force... they suck balls and sound like a super mario game.

Mangini, Minneman, and Donati were my faves. Mangini and Minneman seem to have so much joy in their playing. They really look like they're having the time of their lives. Donati did some friggin' crazy stuff technically.

I love Porcupine Tree, and I'd much rather hear Gavin Harrison in PT than DT, but it would have been really cool to hear his take on Dt's work.

The more I listen to Minneman, the more he sticks out to me, oh man he's great!

It's almost but not quite like the Foo Fighters for me. They all seem like super nice dudes and I want to like their music so much but I just can't.

Or the deep hatred for DT for that matter. I love how many posts start with something like, "I've never been a fan of DT,...BUT" Like, "just wanted to state this right away, so that no one gets the wrong idea!"...God forbid. While the quality of DT's songwriting has gone downhill during this past decade, they really did make some great music in the 90's and there isn't anyone here that can take that away from them. Sure, their music might not be your thing, but so what? It still doesn't take away what they've accomplished during their long 25+ year history. While, I can't say that I'm expecting a huge improvement in their writing, I am personally looking foward to hearing the new record. I'm one of the few that actually welcomed Mike Portnoy's departure. I haven't like his influence in the band for some time now. I think Mangini will be a good fit for the band.

The funny thing is that amongst fans and haters alike, I seem to be the only one that likes newer DT. I actually think everything pre Metropolis (save a few songs here and there) is pure crap   . Like everyone seems to have so much acclaim for Awake. IMO Awake = cheesy crap. My favorite album is actually SC, and everyone seems to hate that album

My faves are Images and Awake. Of the "newer" DT albums I like Train of Thought as a whole, all the other albums have moments. Its good to see they are writing and recording in the same studio as TOT.

Also, just curious, anyone know how old Mangini is?

Just searched and found that Mangini is 48. I was shocked to learn that Jordan Rudess is 54! Man, that Merlin the sourcer look really knocks off the years! I have to remember that when the time comes. :D

I haven't heard any Dream Theater that I haven't liked, and I definitely enjoy their newer stuff. I'd have to say Images and words is my least favorite album, with the rest being tied for first. Ok, maybe Octavarium and Falling into Infinity are tied for first.

Oh, and I was kind of hoping for Marco, but but Mangini is fine with me. His name is just too close to "Man-gina" to me. :D

That was awesome! My admiration of DT has gone through some highs and lows over the years, but I'm excited to hear the new stuff. Hopefully Mangini inspires them to mix it up a little. Either way that series of videos was presented extremely well and I even got a little emotional at the end! But I'm a sensitive guy. :gay:

I'm not a huge DT fan, but interesting series of videos. I think they picked the right guy.
