Anyone else find V30's harsh or abrasive at high volumes??

I like them, but by themselves they have a very dominating midrange frequency in them that is hard to dial out. When I blend them with t75's or something more relaxed in the mids they are gold though. That mix sounds huge and is perfect for playing live.

I think I may want to trade my all V30 Recto cab though, as it's hard to crank that thing without feeling like my ears are going to fall off, haha. What do you guys prefer for high volume playing?? Best i've found so far are g12t75's, they sound kinda stiff and scooped at low volumes, but once they are cranked loud they take on a great, open and balanced sound that is hard to beat. Way easier on the ears than V30's.

It depends on a lot of things, what amp you running? Which Version of V30's are they, I would take it since it is a rectifier cab it is the normal Mesa V30's.

As to ears, at high volume I would hope you are wearing ear protection! I also know many artists that if they are getting that high in volume they use multiple V30 cabs, usually a 2x12 and a 4x12.

To me the V30's cut better in the mix then the 75's, but if you have a mid heavy amp then it does not matter much.

Any way you can stand more to the side of your cabinet instead of directly in front?

Nothing cuts through like V30s. H30s, Greenbacks, T75s, etc... some of these other speakers may sound great and more pleasant while playing by yourself in the man cave. But hit a stage with a loud rock band and the V30s cut right through like a laser. Many others sound dark and mushy, or at least indistinquishable while competing for the sonic space.

Not at all. They must be broken in. One cannot judge this speaker unless it is broken in. Guys buy them new and hate them. Break them in before you judge.

Both my cabs have V30's. Love them.

Yup... ONLY V30s in my half-wall of tone. Cannot begin to tell you how much better a Fender Twin sounds for OD tones with V30s over the Webers that come in the TRRI. Yet the clean tones in this Supersonic Twin sound as good as my old TRRI from what I remember.

Depends on the amp, but this is why I like governors.

Every amp i've used with them...Well, i should say it's when playing them by themselves at home cause when i'm using them in a band situation they sound great and cut so good, which is why i like to use them. I have to EQ them radically different than say t75's or greenbacks. By themselves i find they can be fatiguing.

I hate a love/hate relationship with V30s. They definitely have this obnoxious, ear-piercing midrange that drives me absolutely insane. But, every time I try other speakers for awhile I get this feeling that something it missing, or that I can't hear myself. It's like my ears are so used to V30s that I subconsciously search for that particular annoying frequency they accentuate. So, I've had the best results combining speakers and cabinets rather than changing speakers entirely. Although, at the moment my only two cabs are loaded with nothing but V30s until I get bit by the bug again. I have a bad habit of cab flipping.

Yeah especially when you jam with a band. They sound fucking awesome in a band but when you're just noodling at home that's different. I always find myself turning bass and treble/pres down while pumping mids when playing louder anyways.

They work great in a mix... It's almost as if Celestion knew what they were doing... :)

I do find that you have to adjust the EQ with them at higher volume, especially the high frequencies. Then again, you have to do this with just about any speaker.

Yeah, I had vintage 30's and always found there to be something abrasive about the high frequencies - I tried beam breakers to try to even it out a bit but I was never happy, especially at sound checks and rehearsals when I could stand out in front of my cab. I didn't feel it was too bad when I was on stage playing, but when I stood out front and could hear what the audience was hearing, I really didn't like it. I tried pairing them with G12K100's but the high abrasiveness was still there. In the end I changed completely to Creambacks and I'm so much happier - I actually tried two zilla cabs side by side, one with V30's and one with Creambacks and it was doing that that convinced me I just don't like V30's!

Which Creambacks did you get? 65s or 75s?

V30 is my choice speaker, and a really prefer the Mesa version. They are a bit smoother and a tad clearer. I simply just adjust the presence or treble on my amps depending on volume.
