Anyone else find V30's harsh or abrasive at high volumes??

Right now, I prefer them.

But, I go back and forth with them all the time. For the last few years, I've really been loving the C-90s, but hey suddenly started sounding really trebly lately. I started using my V30 loaded Mesa cab and I prefer the "thump" more than the C90s. Even my main amp started to sound trebly, and sounded like the bass just dropped out. No change in tubes. Basically the same settings Ive always used. Maybe my ears just changed.

I think I overheard that "all about that bass, bout that bass, no treble" song one too many times and now my ears are naturally rebelling...

Isn't it weird how our ears hear things differently one day to the next??

Like someone else said, break in is key with these speakers. I had a quad that I had gigged a lot, and they sounded awesome - warm, but still aggressive and cutting. I got a quad for another cab after I stopped gigging, and they were no were near as nice sounding. They were definitely harsh and not very tight. I ended up dumping them for a broken in quad of Mesa V30's. Much, much better.

The room will also make a huge difference like you experienced. Right now where I live, EVERYTHING sounds like crap. The bass is boomy and incoherent and the highs are harsh. I've played in some crappy sounding clubs and band practice rooms, sheds, etc., but where I'm at now takes the cake. If I didn't know my gear, I'd be ready to sell it lol. V30's definitely have a certain sound to them, so they may not be your thing, but never underestimate the impact of the room.

I love V30's, but not by themselves. I mix them with H30's to cut down on the harshness and fill in the frequencies V30's lack.

I've got two identical 4X12s, except one's got V30s and H30s in an X-pattern, and the other is all V30s. I used to think I preferred the "mutt". But I'm not so sure anymore. V30s are hard to beat for live work. They cut so well. I've had speakers that I preferred over them at home volumes in the man cave (like the H30s). But any other speakers that I run tend to just blend into the mix or even sound mushy live. Not the case with V30s.

I love V30s particularly for live work. Never have a problem cutting through and hearing myself. Recording? You can make a lot of different things work though.

I can't speak for them on the whole but I have liked the V30s that are in my Bogner OS 2x12. I have had that cab for over 10 years and it is nice and broken in.

Ya, that is an application they are great at, cause they fill in that midrange frequency gap perfectly. I don't know what to think of these speakers sometimes?? I go through phases with stuff like this... Right now I can't go wrong with v30's... so who knows...

What is the general consensus on g12h100's? Are they at all similar to g12t75's? Cause I want to replace a couple of the V30's in my rectifier cab with a couple of these, maybe?? I found out they have a sensitivity of 99db's so they should be fine with the V30's and their 100db's sensitivity. They are supposed to have a lot of low end too??

Yes you are right. It was the room I had my cab in that was bugging me. It was very reflective and small. So I moved my jam space to another room, put a carpet on the floor, and put some other sound dampening shit on some of the walls... Sounds great now.

G12 65s are less harsh but cut nicely like a V30. Sound great at low volumes. Don't discount the importance of the type of cab also. The higher end cabs like Bogner/Diezel tend to smooth out those harsh frequencies, making cabs loaded with typically harsh speakers sound great.

Yeah some rehearsal studios and venues I've played in sounded so bad I assumed something was wrong with my rig :)

Isn't this "harshness" everyone speaks of the reason why V30's cut through the mix so well? You can't have one without the other.

I had a 1982B cab with the 100s, harsh to me. Icepicky. If you find a broken in JCM 800 cab from the 80s with the 75s in them they are a lot smoother than the newer ones. Fat almost like a greenback. Seriously. Night and day difference from the newer ones.
