Anyone else find V30's harsh or abrasive at high volumes??

I really dig mine at higher volumes but I'm still breaking them in. I only have about 4 hours on this cab so far.

Yeah, I had vintage 30's and always found there to be something abrasive about the high frequencies - I tried beam breakers to try to even it out a bit but I was never happy, especially at sound checks and rehearsals when I could stand out in front of my cab. I didn't feel it was too bad when I was on stage playing, but when I stood out front and could hear what the audience was hearing, I really didn't like it. I tried pairing them with G12K100's but the high abrasiveness was still there. In the end I changed completely to Creambacks and I'm so much happier - I actually tried two zilla cabs side by side, one with V30's and one with Creambacks and it was doing that that convinced me I just don't like V30's!

Which Creambacks did you get? 65s or 75s?

65s I think - I've had them for a couple of years now, still love them!

If you favor the V30's, you may want to try their Alnico Gold drivers. The V30 was Celestion's attempt at making a higher watt Alnico sounding driver, but it didn't come out exactly like they wanted. Modern glue formulas have made it possible for Celestion to produce a true high watt Alnico driver, which is the Gold version. To my ears, Alnico's sound best in an open-back cabinet. I have no problem with V30's, especially the UK version.

The harshness is more than likely your guitar/pickup/ amp setup. Try a less spikey pickup or different guitar wood.

Both my cabs have V30's. Love them.

Yup... ONLY V30s in my half-wall of tone. Cannot begin to tell you how much better a Fender Twin sounds for OD tones with V30s over the Webers that come in the TRRI. Yet the clean tones in this Supersonic Twin sound as good as my old TRRI from what I remember.

I don't like the weber Jensen style speakers for much but for clean and low gain. For higher gain celestions such as v30s do work better, I just never really like the v30 clean. V30 clean and low gain just sounds more agressive than I am looking for with a fender.

I like to blend v30s with cl80s, they mix well and their sensitivities match...

Depends on the amp for sure, but i really liked my mesa v-30's with my old rg-100's. My rhodes mesa absolutey loves them.

Anybody tried the eminence cv-75 yet? It's their latest take on the v30, just curious how it holds up.

I love V30's, but not by themselves. I mix them with H30's to cut down on the harshness and fill in the frequencies V30's lack.

Not a big fan of V30's by themselves.
However that harshness goes away with some volume & they cut thru in a band mix.
Getting them broken in is key to reducing the yuck factor as well.

i HAD 2 QUADS OF v30'S.

i TRIED HARD TO LIKE THEM BUT THEY'RE JUST ANNOYING.

Today my Mesa cab is sounding awesome, so i don't know?? I have it in a different room that has carpet, instead on the hardwood so there's much less reflections going on, so maybe that was what was bugging me?? Still seem to have a love hate thing going on with these v30's though. I think the best speaker combination is v30's and g12t75's, that Avatar cab just always sounds amazing to me. Super clear, and balanced.

Right now, I prefer them.

But, I go back and forth with them all the time. For the last few years, I've really been loving the C-90s, but hey suddenly started sounding really trebly lately. I started using my V30 loaded Mesa cab and I prefer the "thump" more than the C90s. Even my main amp started to sound trebly, and sounded like the bass just dropped out. No change in tubes. Basically the same settings Ive always used. Maybe my ears just changed.

I think I overheard that "all about that bass, bout that bass, no treble" song one too many times and now my ears are naturally rebelling...

I do think the c90s have more highs than the v30s. However you might want to check your power tubes as they are known to lack bass when they are at the end of their life.

There is a huge difference in Mesa's version of the Vintage 30 over the stock Celestion version. I love the Mesa version and can't stand the stock version.

^^^ yep.

I actually find H-30's (the anniversary ones) and T-75's MUCH harsher at high volumes, personally, but that's just me.

Don't have experience with the Mesa V30's, but the standard Chinese ones are pretty cool to me after a good break-in period.

I have a Marshall 1960A. Came stock with T-75's. Hated it. Replaced two with V30's. Was better, but still harsh. Replaced the remaining two T-75's with two EVH's. I now love that cab to death. It's still bright, but not raspy and hollow, IMO. Bright is how anything Marshall is supposed to sound anyway, IMO.
