My hands have become dry over the winter. It started about 3 or 4 years ago. They get dry, then sometimes I even get cracks. This sucks for playing guitar because the cracks become quite painful. I never would have thought the pain levels of cracked skin on the hands and fingers could be so bad. Bad, but I can still play, it just hurts when I do. I went to the doctor, and they said to use moisturizer. Problem is, I wont use it because I don't want that stuff on my neck/fretboard. I put it on before bed, then wash the hell out of my hands before playing, thus, making the dryness worse. I have come to the conclusion that it is a no win situation.

Anyone have this happen? What do you do, endure the pain? I have a dog, so I wash my hands after touching him. I wash my hands before I play my guitars. After eating, feeding dog, etc. So, I end up washing my hands quite a few times a day.

Suggestions?

I am a hand-washer. I wash them with soap many times a day. So I have to use lotion in the winter. Sometimes I even have to use it in the summer! I lotion in the morning on my way out the door for work. So by the time I'm home at night, ready to play, the greasy lotion has been long since washed-off and no worries about the guitar. I then wash my hands again on the way to bed. This schedule seems to work for me and keep my hands from getting too cracked. I will add that I usually don't use the left-hand fingertips to do the lotioning. That will mess with callouses, so I just use the palm and the length of the fingers to spread it.

Here's what you do Jack. My knuckles get cracked during the Winter. It sucks.

Get yerself some rubba gloves, then sap yer hands in some of this shit. This is the brand, but I'm not sure if this is the right product. It has the consistency of vasoline. Put some of this on your hands. I don't have it anymore, so I use coconut oil. Coconut oil comes in a jar hardened so it's not liquid, until it's heated.

Sap that shit all over yer hands, put on some rubber gloves and go to bed. The next day your hands are like new.

I also use this stuff, which is good. It's not oily and smelly like the stuff women use. But it tends to go away once you wash your hands.

My hands get so cracked -
cracked right now..
You can buy Workers hands at Home Depot
It's not oily

I have that stuff, it's alright. Once you wash your hands it seems to wash off.

Check the label on the high priced items and you will see half of them are just Vaseline.

some will laugh at this but ive been using for 20 years and its the ONLY cure for the cracks....super glue gel....thank me later

I pretty much use hand cream/body lotion year round because I have dry skin... winter it is brutal! My solution is the already mentioned workers hand cream from home depot which I put on at night before bed. This stuff really burns once it hits the cracks but you know it'll get the job done. For daily use or anytime use, I like "utterly smooth", I think it was originaly made for cow's utters but it works great on human hands. Been using that daily and have had less of a need for the worker man's hand cream from the depot for the first time ever. Try that stuff out, it gets absorbed quickly and is great as a maintenance cream to keep from getting really bad.

100% Amlactin. Yes, it's expensive, but odds are, this is what a dermatologist would prescribe for you. It's watery at first, but you have to work it in.

I am a painter and in the winter my hands dry out quickly from the water based paints. I switched to Dove Mens Care soap and its made a world of difference
