1500 dollars to replace your door with a faux vault door meaning it looks like a normal door, there is a company in the east bay that makes them I will see if I can look up the info if your interested

Tear out the sheet rock and put unsecured wire mesh in between the studs with a few strips of insulation. That way if some try's to cut through with a swazall they cant because the reciprocating blade gets caught in the unsecured wire mesh. This and plywood with sheetrock on both sides will keep about 99% of people out.

I got more tips if you want to get crazy.

You have to secure the ceiling and the floor as well.

That's what I am talking about. :D

I thought about using steel panels but figured it would be too expensive but mesh is a really cool idea. Browning makes a door like that I think it is about 2500 but i couldn't figure out a way to secure the rest of the room to make it worth while. Floor is concrete slab so I would say it is pretty secure. I figured I would have to put atleast ply over the top too. I am all ears to this stuff if you have any other ideas.

Call this guy and tell him you want the door to look like a regular house door, they had pics up on their auction site but I dont see them now.

Also from living in some crappy neighborhoods let me give you some advice. When moving in and taking a bunch of valuables inside and out of the house like guitar cases and amps. Do it a four in the morning because if you do it when people are up everyone and their mother will be talking about what they saw you moving into your house.

I will see if I can get a hold of my friend that would build these rooms to see if he has more tips, he was the one that showed me the wire mesh idea.

Cool, I will keep an eye on that. A vault door isn't in the budget right now but maybe something for later.

I already thought of moving the gear over. I think I will just pack it in my car, drive into the garage and unload it so nobody has a clue. I won't be able to do it in one trip but the place is less than 10 miles. I would appreciate any help or ideas. What kind of wire mesh should be used? I looked around and it seems like there is alot of stuff called wire mesh. :aww:

Probably the best insurance is to not let on what is in the house to begin with.

Second, I think guitars stuffed in a closed is pretty sufficient. If they are out of sight in a locked closet it is probably deterrent enough for the common burger.

Plus, how many guitars and amps can you get out of the house without being seen or looking suspicious. I think unless someone is looking to specifically steal your gear, most likely any other break in thief will be looking for Ipods, laptops, cellphones, and jewelry. This is small stuff that can be pawned quickly or sold on the street for quick cash.

Just my thoughts.

Just talked to my buddy and he said plexiglass is a great cheaper alternative to steel for the interior wall and hard to get through just make sure to secure it at each stud then you can lay sheet rock over it, exterior wall should have plywood. That plexi glass is hard to cut through and since its on the interior wall sections have to be cut out and that takes a lot of time.

A friend of mine does a lot of government work and Plexiglas is used in some of his work.

If I remember correct .... My buddy said something about thickness .... you may want to read a bit about it so you know what you are getting.

Great concept.. but if it is REALLLLLY a sketchy neighborhood... they'll still be up, or people will be coming and going at those hours!  ;)

In all seriousness - good luck.. unfortunatley, I have no suggestions
