Anyone ditch their 4x12 for a 1x12? If so, how do you like it?

My band is toying with the idea of using 1x12's instead of our 4x12's. I feel like our stage volume is too loud, and that's negatively affecting our sound in general. Instead of having them behind us, we were thinking of even using them as monitors and on amp stand in front of us. Just an idea.

I used my JTM45 in a Mojotone 1987x combo cab with a Vintage 30 for about 5 years or gigging. It sounded really good. It was definitely loud though!

One day I plugged it into my Hermida ported 2x12. I immediately got online, bought a Sourmash JTM45 headshell and within a week I pulled the amp out of the 1x12 combo cab, sold it, and have used 2x12's and 4x12's ever since.

The difference was stunning.

I am NOT a combo or small amp guy.

Yes a Splawn 1x12 mic'd great for any venu I play typ. 300 or less capacity. It's delivers plenty of stage volume I use a Splawn 40 watt Street Rod Head very easy to transport also!

Depends on the venue...

If the stage is big enough, I bring my Bogner OS212 cab. Sounds massive.

But, in the cover band circuit around here, even some really popular clubs have narrow stages. My band uses IEMs, and the IEM/Wireless Vocal Mic/mixer rack stays on my side of the stage, so space can be limited.

Sometimes, that 6-10" difference between my 112 Combo, and my 212 cab, is make it or break it.

It's never going to sound the same, or feel the same, TO YOU... but a good soundman can make a 112 sound enormous out front. 112's can sound boxy. So pick a speaker that has big tight bass, and a good treble extension, and relaxed mids. It'll kind of cancel that out. My Bogner Barcelona 40W was kinda on the boxy side with the stock V30. But a Creamback H75 really opened it up.

I went from a 4x12 initially to two 2x12's. Then went to a single 2x12 and could never make it work. Currently using two Port City OS 1x12's and they sound as good as anything I have ever used. Again, one on its own is not so good. I don't know if it is do with the bass through the bottom one. It is almost as if the top one balances the frequencies out.
I tried a few normal sized 1x12's and they weren't as good. There is a lot to be said for the cab and cab dimensions.

Cheers Rich

I'll occasionally use a 1-12 when space (either on stage or in the vehicle) is an issue. Other than looking "not as cool" as a 4-12 or stack, I've never had any issues with it.

My band is playing pretty small venues with a small stage 9 times out of 10. I'm thinking my 4x12 might be overkill. I have a Mesa 2x12, as well as a Port City 1x12. I'm just debating what might work best. And, I'm the second guitarist in my band, so there is that.

I use two Bogner 1 x 12's. I get plenty of bottom end and works great on a small stage.

I use a Mesa MarkV combo on most gigs. Larger stages and I'll bring an extra 1x12. If we play huge outdoor venues I bring the Hiwatt...lol

Bogner cubes sound really good paired that's what I've been using

Yes ! I use a bog shiva closed vague or a Carol Ann, works like a charm. The mills is killer but stays home!
