Anyone still think Hoekstra can't hang with Aldrich?

I remember a while back people doubting that Hoekstra was on the same level as Aldrich... just for fun, check him rip it up on burn. Crushes it at the 3:06. In fact, kind of makes Beach look average. He's f_cking killer, what a monster player:

I think the fact his solo is louder (at least on what i'm listening to it on) than rebs is a big factor in making it seem better. Some of what reb was playing was totally lost in the mix. The dude does seem like a great player though.....I think coverdale even sound good here

Is it just me or did Coverdale sound passable there? His vocals don't sound as shot as they did a few years back

From what I've seen of the two players, if they were to "cut heads" Joel would mop up the floor with Doug. Both are great players, but I've seen far more range and better chops from Joel than I have from Doug. That said, I prefer listening to Reb over either of them.

Coverdale did sound decent here... crappy in spots but overall, better than he has sounded in the past few years. Probably had a nice break and by the time the show hits a town near you, his vox will be toast again. That's why you always need to catch these guys closer to the beginning of their tours. At this age, it makes a diff. Aldridge is still a beast though. I would love to have that guy back me in a live band. I heard he was not that great of a studio drummer (lacked orginiality or groove ) but guys loved him for the energy and power he brought live. He just comes to life on stage.

When I saw them live recently I walked away thinking that his voice sounded great compared to how bad it was the last couple of times I had heard him. Maybe he just needed the rest.

I just saw Whitesnake a few weeks ago and was near the stage. Joel's tone and playing was outstanding. Coverdale did a great job and really looked like he was having a great time. I know Reb Beach has been in the band longer but Joel seemed like he fit in better.

I am a huge Aldrich fan but think Joel is doing a great job.

Joel is an outstanding player, as has been said, but a really really cool dude. Met him when we opened for Night Ranger and he's the most welcoming smiley mother fucker on the planet

Saw the show last night. Both guitarist were great and the lead work was pretty much 50/50 for the set or even slightly tilted in Reb's favor as far as volume. I'm a huge Reb fan boy and he impressed as always. Joel was good in his own right and he certainly nails the Sykes vibe on those songs. For an outdoor venue, the sound was awesome, I was about 20 rows back and I could here every note. Coverdale did a decent job and Reb and the keyboard player helped out a lot with the vocals. Reb threw in a lot of whammy tricks during some of those screams so you couldn't really hear Coverdale that well.

Dave's voice does sound better here.. both guitarists sound great and that les paul sounds so much clearer and richer to me when compared to rebs tone..tommy Aldridge on drums is just fantastic, as usual.

He's been a close friend of mine since around '87, and he really is a genuinely all around great dude. He's also one of the funniest people I have ever known. And not too shabby on guitar.

Joel is certainly a gifted player. I just miss Doug's swagger. Whitesnake is about swagger and groove.

Exactly. I don't doubt that WS is still a great live show. I'm more interested to hear what the next original WS album will sound like without Doug. Then we'll really be able to tell if Joel can "hang with Doug."

It's not just about fancy solos. Doug wrote most of the music and produced the last 2 albums, both of which I thought were awesome hard rock records from a band that seemed to have lost it in the late 90's/early 2000's.
