Are EMGs now becoming obsolete?

I recently did the 18v mod to my emgs and the difference was huge to me. I think they sound just as good or maybe even better than all of the boutique passives I've tried.

The 18 volt mod does in fact open up the pickups dynamic range but nowhere near the dynamics of passives, even my boutique passives. there is still plenty of compression happening with the EMGS.

the difference is marked though, most notably when playing clean. The EMGS even at 18 volts still have a sterility about them.

EMGS wont become obsolete. as you see they are adeptly responding to the changing market with newer models to address user complaints. Many still find the EMG the ultimate metal pickup and would never consider a passive.

I agree the one set I have heard was at 9 volts and still sounded far more open...

I still have a David Gilmour EMG set on my Strat. (2) 81 and a 89 around here.

You just need to change the battery's ..... they well not be obsolete for a other year or so.

Why would they be obsolete? SD came along and made a copy. EMG's rule the active P/U market. Others will have plenty of catching up to do before EMG sales fall. Look at the number of manufacturers installing EMG from the factory vs. SD.

Of course, this is just my opinion and about half of my dozen or so guitars have EMG's.
