Are output transformers part of Dave's mods?

I had my amp modded by Dave a few months ago and was wondering if the output transformer was swapped out as part of the mod process. Anyone know? I thought the mod just involved the circuit board, etc. but I haven't opened the amp up. If anyone has any info I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

So does that mean if i sent Dave one of my JMP's to be modded that he would replace my 32 year old Drake OT & PT??? And would i get them back?

Why would you want them back? Daves' transformers would smoke 'em!

Dave doesn't change the transformers as part of the mod .I believe supersonic was referring to when you buy a Friedman brown eye (Marsha)

That's what i was wondering cause i thought i had seen Friedman JMP's with original Drakes.

Yes, Brown Eye/Marsha.

I kind of figured that. I know alot of people are probably expecting the Friedman amp to sound the same as a Marshall-modded to Friedman amp specs but obviously there will be a difference in tone due to the various types of output transformers.

I'm eventually going to ask Dave what an output transformer change would do for the tone. It is not something I would do myself but if I could find a good local tech, I would consider it.

If anyone has heard the Marshall reissues from around 2000-2004, you know why I would want to do this. They are pretty bright. Dave's mod obviously tamed alot of that brightness but I think an eventual transformer replacement would mellow it even more.

For the record, I love my amp and am having a blast with it. I picked up a Mesa 2x12 with V30's in it today and like it even better than the Marshall cab I was using (big surprise). :) I do need to find out what Dave recommends. I don't want someone tinkering with something they don't know how to do.

Every Marshall I have ever played is bright .If you changed to v30s from celestion gt-75s then that should tame alot of the brightness . I know changing transformers changes the tone but I would think that if you are just looking to tame the brightness there would be better ,less expensive ways of doing it . Such as changing certain caps .

That's a good point. There are probably some other things (even preamp tubes) that could change that brightness.

Marshalls are bright but I've been reading alot about some of Marshall's most recent reissues and people all mention how they are over-the-top in the brightness dept. :) I can turn the treble, mids, and presence down to 9:00 and still hear it clearly. I don't like to drop the settings too much because then you start losing a certain part of the tone.

I believe Dave has a voicing mod he can do to the amp . You should ask him about it .
