Studio trickery???

thats the only record they play THAT fast on the solos. and there is an audible smear to them, like they were hit with a little speed bump in the tape machine...anyone else hear and think this too??

Not just the solos but the entire mix has a tonal quality that sounds sped up to me. There is a distinct tonal change when analog devices are sped up/slowed down. I could imitate that quality by manipulating my old turntables pitch control when playing back records. The record is still an all time classic, sped up or not.

don't get defensive...we all like the record ok...back away from the turntable...

You took my comment as defensive ? You didn't understand that I was basically agreeing with you ?

They do sound odd but so does their entire production compared to today's standards. They played just as fast live, weather they were accurate or not is another story. Since they never play them accurate maybe they needed to slow it down a bit in the studio.

Or since the production was just weird altogether maybe not, who knows.

I think it is more than likely KK just playing whatever the fuck he wants as fast as he wants. Chromatic bullshit will sound super fast if you are just filling in space and yanking on the bar. Love the band but he was an atrocious lead player. Still is..

I remember a youtube video (might be your boy Terreberry) where someone took a lead track and removed or squished the gaps between the notes and it def had a similar sound to some of those RIB solos. When I heard that 'sped up' recording my first thought was; Vinnie Vincent Invasion.

They were just as fast live, so I don't think the album was sped up.

Nah. I've read a bunch about the making of that album. Rick kept telling them "FASTER! MORE!". IMO,it is what it is. I know Rez is a far more experienced sound geek for the more recent recording techniques than I am,but IMO what you hear on "reign in blood" is a perfect storm of slayers attitude and well practiced commitment at the time and Rick Rubins first attempt at producing a brutal album. Read the 33 1/3 book from this album....it's a great read if you are a fan.

I do know they had Dave record the drums on "Show no mercy" without the cymbals, and then tracked them separately. Gene Hogland says he was having to hold the kit together while Dave was tracking that album.

I've never even considered it to be sped up. Nothing makes me think it was.

I know one thing that album is pretty short...isn't it like 34m start to finish? Need to go look.

Not even, sits at about 28 mins and change.

The tape had the whole album on both sides

I remember this. It's like the best bonus

I don't think the recordings are sped up faster than performed, but it does sound like maybe there's studio trickery going on. Back in those days, a bunch of bands were experimenting with weird ideas in order to thicken up their recordings.

I remember the first time I heard Master Of Puppets slowed down and heard what sounded like a flanger throughout the entire album. Apparently, a few rhythm tracks were tracked with a flanger on at all times. I never heard it when played at normal speed, but slowed down, you definitely hear it.

You can burn Reign In Blood and South of Heaven onto 1 cdr and the same with Seasons In The Abyss and Divine Intervention . Makes a for a very brutal listening experience

I have seen Slayer live four times. I think they are legit. I do however think Korn was FN playing to a CD live. I think the dude was playing fake bag pipes also. I was right up front and he was not singing half the time. Not sure if he was sick or what ? Also, the band Venom used to speed there stuff up in the studio. My brothers seen them live and was pissed when they got home because they played the songs half the speed.

I really can't tell. But in course of the years they did speed up their playing. The re-recorded "aggressive perfector" is a good example. I read in an interview that the adrenaline made them play faster live. Who knows, still an amazing band that pulls it off live too.

I can't say one way or the other if they sped up their leads on the album, but I saw them in the old day's EVERY TIME they came through Chicago and they pulled it off live, while playing the songs considerably faster. Maybe they did that in the studio to achieve a certain sound? Who knows?
