Have seen this a few times in my day.

Happened to me twice. The first time the gas pedal stuck to the floor at full throttle as the carb linkage would not release. I was able to pry the gas pedal off the floor with my foot. Never figured out exactly why that happened, and it only did it once. Sprayed down the linkage with carb cleaner and that took care of it.

The second time (on a different car) the throttle linkage got hung up on the bottom of the air filter assembly. The mounting bracket for the linkage had come loose and bent. Turned the key back one click, which killed the engine and I could still steer, without power steering. Took off the air filter assembly and drove it home.

Def a stuck throttle. And being open wheel did not help at the end. Hope dude was ok.

I competed in powerlifting for years - mainly in the APF and WABDL federations (never in the USAPL or "USGayPL" as commonly referred to) which is the fed this freak and case is linked to -and can say without a doubt that this kook would have never been allowed to lift, be it by the meet director or fellow lifters in the warm-up area/locker rooms.
