Attenuator and 2 cabs question

Hi
I might be getting an attenuator in a trade and it has one speaker input but my amp has two cabs. Will it be OK to use a Y cable and plug each cab into the split end and put the single end into the attenuator assuming the Ω reading on the Y cable is compatible with the attenuator? If this is OK, what kind of Y cable should I get? Most of the ones I've seen have the ring on one side and the tip on the other (like stereo to mono I guess), that won't work, will it? How should I do this if a Y cable isn't the answer, or can I do it?

The gear in question is a Peavey Classic 50 amp with Peavey Classic 410E and Peavey Classic 115E cabs and a 50 watt Weber Mini Mass attenuator.

Thanks!

free bump day :)

I don't think you can do that. You best bet would be to daisy chain the cabs together and just use one speaker cable. Please make sure you are using speaker cables and not instrument cables. 2 - 16 ohm cabs daisy chained together should be seen as a parallel load at 8 ohms total.

As far as using the attenuator with this setup, I'm not sure. If what I said above is correct then you would use the 8 ohm setting on the attenuator. I would email Weber and ask them what they recommend. They are great to work with. Worst case, you may need to look into a cabbone or similar from Radial.

Good luck, and maybe someone else on here has a better idea

as your attorney, i advise you to not y cable a speaker output!

i would attenuate the 410e, just because that's the one you hear mostly (assuming it's on top), the one I personally know i would notice being attenuated more.

obviously, run the first speaker out of amp /into attenuator/out from attenuator to top 410e speaker in

other speaker out to the 115e

just for reference, assuming that head has 2 parallel outputs and assuming your 410e is still stock 16ohms mono and the 115e is still stock 16ohms, then you set your head on 8ohms.

thats a nice classy looking rig you have there! those classic cabs are really nice sounding...i'd love to hear a clean tone clip with just that 115e going (amp then would be set to 16 ohms)....always wanted one of those cabs.

Hi and thanks for the replies. I did daisy chain the 1 15 to the 4 10 and got an 8Ω load so I put the Weber and amp to 8Ω and rocked it. I haven't e-mailed Weber about this but I might just to be sure.

I originally got the amp with the 1 15 only and it sounded great that way. I found the 4 10 used for almost nothing. I saw this setup online for sale for over 1K and he has the 15 on top of the 4 10 . I think the guy is optimistic, not that I have anything against my amp! I have about $550.00 invested in mine.

I learn something everyday

Yes, you can use a Y cable with no problems. Weber actually manufactures one specifically for that purpose:

All you do is set your impedence to half of what your cabs are rated at: two 16ohm cabs would be used on the 8ohm setting on the amp, or two 8ohm cabs on the 4ohm setting.

a regular old y cable though? it looks like the weber one is specifically a speaker Y cable.

i assumed he meant a y splitter.

You're right...it has to be speaker cable. I've used the Weber one above with a 1959RR into an attenuator and then out to two 4x12's for over 3 years now...works great.
