I'm really interested in the AX8. I know it's great live, and in the studio. . .can you run headphones out of it, or into small powered monitors for home practice (I'm assuming you can, but figured I'd ask).

Also, I see most people use at least one expression pedal with it. What is that set up for?

Are all the amps from the AxFx2 in the AX8? Cornford, Friedman, classic Fenders, etc?

Not sure about headphones but certain the unit can be run into powered monitors.

The expression pedals, and you can run up to 4 of them, can be set to operate a ton of functions, but I imagine the majority use them for wah and/or volume.

There is no dedicated headphone Out like the Axe-Fx but I connect mine to my little Mbox Audio Interface and use it's headphone jack. As for expression pedals they can be assigned to basically control anything like mentioned above. Myself I have 2: one for volume and one for a wah.

Its hard to beat a DI into a 10,000 watts PA as a speaker cab.

It does sound good but i will always be a 2x100 watt head 2x412 guy.

I can prolly crank as loud as you without the PA. ;)

Agreed. And Believe me, I'm a tube guy. I love my glass. Never thought the day would come where I would play a gig much less a headlining gig at the House of Blues with a modeler and not an amp. Blasphemy!!! But things change. I had lower back surgery 2 years ago from 25 years of loading and unloading 4x12 cabs so lugging 2 halfstacks around like I did the last two times we played there is not in my best interests. So if I can get the same sound of my 5153 miced up through a PA system as I can from a black box connected direct to the PA system sign me up.

You do sound killer tho Brah, Randy would be proud ur doin him right.

I always tell my friends that gig after a fatty & a few beers nobody knows what you're playing anyway.

My best friend in Union Communications by day does visual light & sound at venues by night.

His buddy is just played a TOOL Tribute gig witha AXE II, brought the house down.

And when he was done, pick up the handle & leave [4 space rack].

I lugged many 4x12 by myself but if its not on wheels i need help nowdays.

Hell i sold a Fender Twin because everytime i used the stairs if felt like my knees were coming apart.

Holy damn! Couldn't imagine lugging gear up and down stairs.

This fugger was every bit 80 lbs.

Awesome clean but it had to go.

my favorite jake era ozzy song

sounds great!

just a fyi
the big lick in that song after the solo is a real left hand stretch from what i remember, not a right hand tap deal;

starting on high e: pick 19th fret pinky /pull off to 12 fret index /pull off to open for first 3 notes
b string: same triplet pattern/frets as above

repeat that 6 note lick 3x

then shift to 17th fret pinky/ 12th fret index/ open on the e and b string, keeping the same rhythmic pattern as above, for the final 6 notes of the lick

Yeah you know, I was hauling Mesa combos around to practice and it's no fun to carry an 85 LBS 1x12 combo. I've used Axe-Fx's before but I think my monitors didn't help, the little Rokit 5's. They're ok but I guess bigger is better.

Getting harder to take one 4x12 and one of my amps up 8 steps only once a month these days. Last gig I took the 2c+ combo, strategy 400 in a small rack and a Mesa EV 2x12. Back was telling me to F off for a week. Tone was killer though!

Really considering going the AX8 with FRFR(on stage) for my gigging needs. Been a tube guy all my life but the AX8 looks promising and being in a band that covers 4 decades of styles, genres, etc.... it really could be time to go the modeler route. I don't record so would be used exclusively for gigging. Really liking some of the presets Ive heard thus far.. ie: Cornford, MK IIC+, 5153, Bogner. Not worried about FOH sound since that's where it would shine.... apprehensive about losing that 'push of air' sound and feel that tube amps give me on stage... but I think a decent FRFR could keep me pretty satisfied. Hmmmm

ps... your clips sound KILLER. Nice work

why do you need a frfr if you are using monitors anyway? dosent that defeat the purpose of not carrying shit..?

Depending on the size of the stage you might want some backline sound. I don't need it but I like having some sound from behind me and my singer does too. For some it's just old habit I guess.

Just got my invite today. I can't wait to get it. These clips sealed the deal for me

My only issue with the AX8 is switching from say hi gain to my clean sound or vise versa. There is a slight audio gap... about 1/8 of a second. Had to change my timing on a few songs to accommodate this. Not an issue with my Axe-Fx though since it has the capability to use 2 amp blocks in one preset so when I know I will be doing a lot of channel switching I use the Axe-Fx instead.

Is the ax8 a good choice if you plan on using a power amp and a 4x12? It gets great marks so I am on the fence, should I try it with a power amp return or 4 cable method of a tube amp? I like as mentioned the sound behind me in a traditional air pushing box..is it possible to run both with ax8? Frfr and a 4x12? Seems it would not be practical as with frfr your using amp and cab Sims so I don't know...

Yes you can. In this video I'm going direct to FOH from Output 1 and going to a Matrix Power amp and EVH 4x12 cab behind me from Output 2. I'm sending the signal from Output 2 without any cab simulation.
