Axe Fx as Effects only..... sort of

Hey all,

Have a question as to the cool factor of the Axe Fx as an effect only processor. I have a mid-size set up I wish to downsize... I have an Eventide GTR4000, PCM 70. Line 6 Echo Pro and Filter Pro..... mixer, GCX... blah blah..10 space rack. My heads are the Soldano SLO100.... and love em!!! So don't plan on bailing in that tone.... Plus I have a Friedman on the way so I'll be putting that to use when it arrives. I know the Axe Fx is amazing from what I've heard/seen but I see little examples or hear much about using as effects only with an amp rig. I would love to dump everything and just use the one box. Would so so much cooler to do the various projects and have a consistent, more portable set up from band to band.... just don't see the modeling thing being the "main" reason to use it, (though after hearing it....that may change) though I'm sure it will come in handy for recording and such. Point blank... can it do the job of those devices well? and does the II do it better then the Ultra? Some nice deals on the Ultra can be had now... Thanks in advance!!

If you're planning on running it 4-cable I would try to test it first with your rig. I had one for awhile and although it worked, I could never get the levels right. Ended up going to a digitech gsp1101 and that thing works perfect 4-cable.

I used my Ultra as a primary FX unit only. I may pick another one up to do the same once I get the Axe-II as my main DAW/DI kit (sold my Ultra ages ago). It was awesome - I used it in tandem with a Mako Mak4 preamp and Fryette 2/90/2 poweramp. The effects were excellent. Having said this, I still have my choice stomps that I simply won't give up (ie: Eventide TF, PF, Keeleys, OCD, Xotic, CAL, Retro-Sonic, etc).

I use mine as an fx-only, just like a G-force: guitar into amp, fx send into Axe-fx, Axe-fx output into amp fx return, amp into speaks. On the Axe, no amp module or cabinet, only delay, chorus, etc. I never liked the 4 cable method. But, if you do the 4CM, you can put wah, compressor, virtual stomp boxes before your amp's preamp, then into your amp's power amp, and still use the amp models easily if you want to. The challenge is setting all the levels correctly. Can all be done, your preferences rule. For me, why model a SLO-100 when you have the real thing.....porn vs. your girl friend? I guess with that analogy, you've got dozens of modeled women to choose from or one real one. Hmmmmm.........
