Anybody have experience with the badcat cougar amps? I might be getting one in on a trade (cougar 50w head) and have never played through one. Thanks

the later models are produced by a different company who bought the name from a the boutique company i believe

I had a Cougar 50 watt head for a while and really liked it. I sold it to thin the herd but in no way was bored or over the amp. Clean is just functional but the drive channel is very good and very flexible with the mid boost/frequency selector knob. Great hard rock to metal sound. Wouldn't get it to do edge of breakup tones. You have to set the gain very low or at least use a low output guitar to attempt it. (or it may work if your guitar has an effective volume roll off).

As far as I know the Cougars have always been made by the same company that licensed the BadCat name to manufacture in Asia. The headshell feels solid and it came with a nice sturdy handle. I never took it out to look at the guts but it felt well put together.

How does it compare to your Mesa Stiletto..

Sorry to say I couldn't describe it that well. There are differences but not easily put into words. The Stiletto does the JMP/JCM with gain at 3-5 sound quite well that the Cougar can't quite do. The cougar can get fatter and meatier sounding than the Stiletto when the gain's up into hard rock/metal territory. The top end doesn't get brittle on the cougar where it can on the Stiletto if you take it too far. Luckily I get the Mesa where I need it without having to set it that way. The cougar is direct and tight but will get quite saturated. The Mesa can do that but just has a bounce or elasticity to it that I really like. Especially with the tube Rec and spongy options. It's a bit more authentic Marshall so covers that jones for me. It can't get as saturated as the Cougar without falling apart a bit. The mid EQ on the cougar is a great design. Really helps tailor the sound for different guitars and tunings.

This was my attempt at a less gain classic rock tone. Gain knob is "barely" on.
