Bareknuckles Pickups...What's the Deal?

I first started looking into to these around '04 based on internet hype. After speaking with them about some of their models I found it odd that they referenced Seymour Duncan very frequently when describing their pickups..."like a JB with more bottom", "think of it as a Custom with more mids", etc, etc. I've played several of their pickups and they sound great, but not so great that I think they have a value significantly above and beyond the Duncans that they apparently used for inspiration. The majority of those tonal differences are most likely easily made up for with a bit of eq on the amp.

I see they get an awful lot of love here. At this point they seem like glorified Duncans to me...what am I missing? What makes these so much better that many of you are willing to pay double Duncan prices for them? Thanks

i'm sick of hearing about them myself, and they can suck my balls! :gethim:

if i can't get it from Anderson, Duncan, Suhr, or Dimarzio, i don't want it!

yea, some of the BK pups are allright, but not double the price allright!

They're boutiquey...hand made...hand wired...and their customer service is next to none.

Every time I get a set, I feel special - not to mention, I think they sound great. So there's definitely a sense of marketing ego and specialty involved, but at the end of the day, they've got a great tone, great build and are unique

So it goes...

They're hand wound, and you can talk to the maker yourself about what guitar they'll be going in, what style of music you play, tones you're looking for, etc. That's worth the extra cost to some folks.

Good point. Out of curiosity (as in not trying to be a smartass or stir shit) does Tim still hand wind every pickup himself, or has he trained other people to ease the work load?

Tim is a super great guy. I've been dealing with him for six years. You cannot get much better service and the pickups are excellent.

Not a fan of BKP or MCP... I like "some" Duncans but have been a Dimarzio guy for so long it's hard to envision (or hear) myself playing anything else. (Except Gibson pickups).

I think they compare them to SD pick-ups because SDs are common and people have played them. It's easier to put the tone in perspective when you have a base tone to reference.

PS - and ya, as far as referencing SD in their comparos, it's better than using all these adjectives when adjectives without a founded premise or context mean jack shit. It's a reference point. That's all.

SD is good reference point, so I understand that. BKP has a good customer service. They reply your e-mails and you can actually speak with them on the phone (I called them up once). Are they worth the price? I don't think so, but who am I. They do produce quality pups and it sounds good. But that high price for a winding and a magnet makes me wonder. In the end, there is no better brand, it is all personal preference. The hype is just internet talk.

I like BKPs and I hate Duncans.

Tell us how you really feel.

I hated EMGs too, but I sold out BKPs for DiMarzios, and DiMarzios for EMGs... so what do I know?

:hys: Well said... Even though I'm a fanboi, this was a nice retort.

They're the best pickups, more than worth the price. But that's my personal opinion and I've become a fanboi

I love my Miracle Mans

That being said, if you have an axe with Duncans, I wouldn't go crazy spending $ for BKs- I'm sure what you have suffices. But in my situation, I found an Epiphone I really liked and needed to go the extra mile.

BKPs fanboy here :salute:
