BARON or SPLAWN for the best Marshall Killer or modern...

I don't know. That B series doesn't do much for me and I think it would grow old quickly. The K series (for KICKS ASS) is where it's at.

Steve

Pair the "B" series with 25w green backs and you can get as raw as you want, but I do agree there is a certain level of polish to the tones wich is very appealing at least to me. The video's really don't do the amp justice, they sound much better live and in the studio they are amazing

Kudo's to Dave both the "B" and "K" series amps have allowed me to thin the number of amps in my studio by 5

I agree that even though the videos have an alright sound for the amps they don't do them justice. The amps are much meatier and rawer in real life. At least that's what I can say as far as my K88 goes.

These amps really are top notch and even though I've been swapping amps over the past couple years the K88 still holds strong next to all of them. I can't see my self ever getting rid of it.

To be honest I've been thinking about getting another Snott Watt. ;)

The baron amps sound juicier and warmer than the Splawns

You do realize his wait list right .I think Steve K said October a couple of weeks ago ..he books up fast .you will need to make a decision if you want one in 2011

I had a Baron K2 with EL34's. Changed to Kt88 after a month. Dave is the best guy to work with. I know he didn't hesitate to answer all my stupid questions. I thought it was gonna be more in the Modern High gain range. Defiantly more in the hot rod marshall range. I really liked the voicing of the amp a lot. Sounded nice as lower volumes. Great build just wasn't my thing. Went back to the 5150's.

No rush!!! Plus I would look for a used amp. :)

Yeah the fact that you can switch different tube types with just biasing is always a plus as well. Can't get enough of the different flavors.

I did a KT88 vs EL34 thing a while back.

So Baron amps allow you to be able to switch tube types?

yes. if you have the k2 it can take el34's or the 88. just a simple bias is needed

Yessir. The B series can use EL34s and 6L6s they may also use KT88s and other tubes but I'm not 100% sure on that. As far as I know the K series can use EL34s, 6L6GCs, KT88s, and 6550s as I've used all four types of tubes in mine.

I have to admit, the Baron B60-120 amps have really had my attention for awhile now. They seem like a killer take on the aggressive british modded-marshall vibe, but have an original voicing of their own.

The only thing I'm unsure of is if the amps can attain that certain "rawness" of a JCM or JMP. The Baron has such a cool sound, but it seems to always have a certain "sheen" present. Kind of like a really polished sort of grease in the tone that seems really desirable for some rippin leads, but may get a little old after awhile...not really sure without playing one myself, but it sort of seems like an "idealized" british hot-rodded tone if that makes any sense.

Either way, they are high on my list right now of amps that I want to play. I've spoken with Dave over the phone and he's a genuinely great guy and very knowledgable. He knows his shit!

That sounds badass. :)

Maybe look into a Ceriatone Chupacabra or Yeti as well. Basically hot-rodded JMPs.

Awesome comparison! The 88s sounded HUGE on that first metal clip!

Also, for those that don't need a clean channel and can't decide between the british B60/120 and the K88 amps, Dave makes this guy:
http://www.baroncustomamps.com/DHG%20Series.html

Has both gain circuits! Badass! Go from vintage Marshall-ish gain to full out metal:) If this had a clean channel as well it would be my next amp for sure.

You may have to wait a long time for used "B60/120" never seen one up for sale yet!

Interesting, it has a British channel but runs KT88s. I need cleans though.

True, you don't see many used...although I have seen a few used on TGP (It's been a while). Although I do have a shot at a used Surreal CM50 I may consider.
