i have not played, heard, or felt one better than mine... but of course, of course i'm bias'd right? heads up!

i will agree mine is not as a modern tone as i hear from some of these clips. its somewhere in between stock jmp and modded marshall tone in that its a little more open but i guess its all in what you are looking for.

I am very close to making the move! Looking for the ultimate Marshallesque or British amp with modern features....solo boost, multiple modes, etc. Splawn Street Rod and Baron M60 are the front runners. I will be ordering within the next 4 weeks and whichever I do, I will have a full review and clips! Any others before I decide? Looking for Plexi to hot rodded modern Marshall. Led Zeppelin to Metallica and Tool. Will be using Greenback speakers.

Baron B60: versatile, very bright, Can get multiple type tones, can control feel of poweramp, bias can be done without pulling the whole amp out, loop is really good, no solo boost, effects loop bypass switch on foot pedal

Splawn: monster tone, darker, a lot more bass, loop is so/so, bias you have to pull out amp, loud!, not nearly as saturated as the baron...way more clear tone. Does a couple tones, but does them beyond well.

Way more clear? Are you saying the Baron amps are muddy? They sound articulate to me.

Not at all...just saying the Quickrod(at least mine) was never saturated....Barons can easily get saturation. Splawns have that clear punch...Baron can get that too, but also has the high end saturation if you want it.

I think the 2011's(Splawn) have more saturation from what I have read on the Splawn forums.

I want something different from my Bogner and PWE so I am leaning toward Splawn. Migrate be ordering it in a few weeks. Any other amps you all recommend?

The Street Rod just sounds so frickin good! Like the best Marshall, and different enough from my current amps. I am just not happy with any of the new Marshalls in production.

a good Marshall killer is the Marshall YJM100 ;)

Just what I was thinking or a fortin modded JVM 210. Still trying to budget a YJM, great amp.

Email Gainfreak via MOdsquad music or just follow my sig.

I can't stand Malmsteen, so owning anything with his name in it, would kill me. LOL.

In the 80s guys would have killed for that head, just put a piece of tape across the YJM then.

The amp is awesome.

Don't worry man, when you plug into it you won't automatically start playing diminished arpeggios over the same song over and over again. You'll still sound like you, only with baddass Marshall tone.

Good low volume tone? Loop? Two channel?

It has a built in attenuater and switchable 100/50 watt mode. Footswitchable boost mode. Kinda like two channels.

Three of the biggest plexi heads on the forum, Carl, 70strat, and Barzini love the amp. Carl's clips got huge reviews from some of the best players on the forum who are hounds for tone.

Good enough opinion for me.

Give MOdsquad an email.

But I do like having a clean and dirty channel. Thanks guys.

Guys, this does sound impressive! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp7yiO1_khI
I hear it is heavy though and wide? My Greenback cab is only 26" wide.
I was in the process of getting a new cabinet as well....a large diagonal Marshall style 212....26x27x14. However, I may order a Port City 212OS. How do you all think the Port City with Celestion "Creambacks" would work with the Malmsteen head????

So, I grew up in the 80s and loved 80s metal and Malmsteen but I am so far removed from that now. I am all classic rock, some 80s rock, tons of 90s rock and hard rock, grunge and some modern rock. I am working on two bands, classic rock covers and 90s hard rock and grunge. A few reviews I have read said this amp is not good for defined modern music. We play Tool, Metallica, A Perfect Circle and Alice in Chains, so the amp needs to be capable. I could always stick with plan A, Splawn, or Chupacabra. However, sometimes it clears my head if I stay with a Marshall if I want a Marshall! LOL!
Maybe it takes pedals well, like my Fargen Sonic Edge J&J Overdrive!!!

Would this YJM head provide a creamier tone and warmer tone than a Splawn? To me it sounds like it. :)

Concerns. 100 watts! I tend to prefer 50 watts because I can get them into the sweet zone better and less tube to maintain. :) Also, with our covers, I often need to switch from clean to heavy in an instant, which needs two channels!
I also prefer a built in solo boost.....although I have an EQ on my board that can do that.

What about heavy? We play heavy tunes like some Metallica off the Black and Load albums and some Tool and A Perfect Circle.

How about build quality??? New Marshalls like the DSL are not built as well as my Bogner Shiva for example or sound as good. :(

I love my PWE and Bogner, but I always thought I needed a real Marshall and real Mesa Boogie.

OK, what about the Marshall AFD100???????? Either that or a Splawn or Ceriatone Chupacabra!

Ive got a 2011 splawn QR and i love mine. Ive head many high end heads including the Fortin Bones and I would put this up there with the best of them when its set up right. Im one of the very few that actually thinks the splawn sounds good with V30's especially when paired with a little darker speaker. I mainly use OD2 on gear one with a boost because I really like the clarity of the plexi's so there is a shitpile of more gain on tap, 2 gears in fact. Im planning on doing some clips hopefully in the coming weeks ive just been super busy. I really like the clips of the B60 I have heard as well but have not had a chance to play one in person.

There is no one amp that will do all the things you are asking.

If you have to have a clean and dirty channel and want hotrodded Marshall tone playing the kind of music you described, I'd go with the Splawn. I can't comment on how it would sound with Creambacks, but there's only one way to find out for sure. I'm sure it'd soud great. Just bite the bullet and go for it.

I am not saying to nail tones perfectly. I mean all the things I ask....I can cover with my PWE and Bogner. :)
