Bass, Bass playing, bass players, and bass accessories.

Been playing bass for 17 or 18 years, on top of the 28ish I've played guitar for now. For a while, bass was my primary instrument. Currently gigging in a hard rock cover band and laying down tracks in an original band. Also played Geezer in a Sabbath tribute for a couple years too.

But I'm no Jaco, that's for dang sure!!

Me neither!

Cheater! Didn't Jaco play a fretless?

It sounded pretty good though.
He played both. We all know him for his fretless but I’ve seen pics of him playing a lot of different neck configurations.

I'm a converted guitar player. 4,5 12 string. Tech 21 dug pedal! I'm happier than I have ever been able to chasing tone with guitar!

I play a little for demos I write but I play like a guitar player.
I've always thought it was actually a fretted Jazz Bass with the frets removed.

Funny 'cause I play keys and guitar like a bass player 'cause, well, I'm a bass player. Supposedly.

He definitely tore out frets and made a fretless out of it… but Jaco was also mental ill and extremely erratic. He’d play whatever was available. Often he didn’t have a bass, as he was homeless off and on. He’s show up to gigs without an instrument, the He’d borrowed basses (your bass) and then go hock them afterward. But he’s on record heavily with the fretless. That much is clear. I have lots of his live stuff and I hear both fretted and fretless on everything so who knows.

In fact, I removed the frets from the first bass I bought, a Jason (never seen one since).

I painted it black with regular paint. Really fucked it up but hey, what'd I know?

My first bass was an Ibanez Gio I got for $200 off the guitarist of the band I joined. I ended up finding the same exact bass in the same exact color in fretless and bought it years later for $300. My first bass and my first fretless were almost the same bass. I can see why ripping the frets out of your bass is the way to go. You already know where the notes are. You don't need them.
