Not really into many rock bassist tones, my favs are all jazz and fusion cats.

Looks like you've been hanging out at the "other" forum a bit lately

LMAO

Tis true, most rock guys tone is not very good as they are rarely in front like jazz cats or fusion dudes.

Show me a better rock tone then ma boy Marcus Miller

Burning the fucking joint down!!!

Plus that other forum would have their heads chopped by bass playing jazz cats

Dude, Marcus Miller has some serious chops. But my vote goes to Jeff Berlin, awesome gifted bass player, amazing the stuff he does with 4 strings only.

Joey DeMaio of MANOWAR fame.

Bass had more fuzz than the guitar on the first albums

JUst remembered this thread earlier today while listening to Mudvayne, awesome tone and solid chops for a rock guy

Geddy's to the board sound is good as well, forgot that one.

As a bass player, my all time favs (that I can think of at the moment, too many to even rember):

Paul McCartney, Chris Squire, Greg Lake, John Entwhistle, Gary Thain, Roger Glover / Glen Hughes (Deep Purple), Flea, Billy Sheehan

Metal:

Geezer Butler, Cliff Burton, Steve DiGiorgio, Frank Bello, DD Verni, Steve Harris,

Having read all of these posts, those from a bass forum and taking into consideration the bass player's favorites, we're going to use Geddy Lee's work on Moving Pictures as our reference. We're also going to use Lee Sklar's work. The idea is to get the fattness and warm of Lee Sklar with the punch and bite of Geddy Lee on MP.

Well a huge part to Geddy's growl is that ricky 4001, that bass has it's own gig going on as I know having owned one for years.

My ONLY gear sale regret

I hear you. The idea is to marry Geddy Lee's with Lee Sklar's. So, the question is how do you get Sklar's big fat warm tone with a bit of Geddy Lee's growl? That's what we're after.

...Robert Deleo (STP) - his tone on Purple was AMAZING! Definitely one of the most underrated bassists ever!!!

Dude, I totally forgot about him. I can't tell you how many times I've turned up STP and told people to listen to his kickass bass playing. That guy is super tasteful. His brother on guitar is very tasteful too if you ask me.

I totally agree Thump. He'd be the bassist I'd want to work with as a guitarist. Friggin awesome awesome awesome, tasteful, and that man can write a riff like a mofo!!

Eric

I know I'm a little late at this point, but my choices would be for rock/metal tones:

Robert DeLeo
Mike Starr
Mike Inez
Jason Newsted - always had some good tone going on when you could hear him
Geddy Lee
Steve Harris
Eddie Jackson
