Be50 compression question

I love the be50 amp, but it came with jjel34 s which are not my favorite tube. Today I took it to the amp tech to have it biased and have eh el34s installed. The bias from the jj was 44/37, he said he though that was kinda high but the amp sounded good so I’m not concerned. He set the EH tube at 40/37 and it sound really open and tons of response. However I lost some compression and now the single notes don’t go in to feedback bloom like the jj did. Question, any way out side a comp. pedal in the loop to give the amp just a push of compression? Thanks

I always go back to JJ’s in my Friedmans. They have the right amount of compression and feel. I’ve tried about 6 different kinds of tubes in them.

I’m not sure what you mean with the XX/XX bias numbers? Is that the range of bias on the tubes? Should be around 32ma. FYI.

That’s what the Each tube measured, I am not a tech but that’s what they were with 119 wall voltage. There is only one trim pot, he said he had to turn it back a bit because how aggressive the eh are, The jj aren’t bad but eh just have an openness that I really like to have. After rehearsal today it sounded amazing. The cleans with a ts808 in front just sound great. It really didn’t need it (compression) in the mix, sounded just like I want.

The Jj shipped at that number, 37/44 is what the power tubes measured. It was one of the first amps shipped but I have to say it didn’t come with a manual or any information. I may have the powertube turned back alittle bit more. There reading 37/40 now

Yeah I'll bet you'll like the sound of JJ at 32ma. Those tubes are hot.

Set the EH tubes to 32ma there is a sweet spot and it seems to be around there. They will seem smoother and more compressed set at 32. The bias you have is way to hot.

Ok cool, I’ll get my tech to turn them back. Thanks for the info.

What is the plate voltage on the be50? I'm guessing 480'ish if you're saying to bias at 32ma.

Really it's around 460 or more. Yes I know it's not 70% but every tube has sort of a sweet spot I like how it sounds set there.

Totally agree with you on that statement.

CrazyNutz - Demoed a unit. It was running 470V on the plate and biased at 35mA of 65.8% dissipation.

I haven’t had the chance to turn it down yet but I did put a 5751 in v3 and the bloom is back lol. This amp is something else, I’m going to run it like this till I get over to my tech. It won’t overload any thing running at these numbers will it? I’m sure my tech would never let it out the door if he felt it would, rock on, rock out!

It's biased a little on the hot side, but you should be fine for the short term.
